Blackstone Analysis

2014 BMW 328i sDrive w/ N26

60k miles on the odometer. Oil/filter change every 5k along with a bottle of Techron on the last tank full of gas.

Mobil 1 0w40

BMW OEM oil filter

K&N drop in air filter

Would appreciate others opinions. I am currently running LiquiMoly SAE 5w40 and a BMW OEM paper filter for the next analysis.

Analysis reveals elevated levels of the following:

Boron 69%
Calcium 23%
Phos. 16%
Zinc 12%
Moly 6%

Thoughts?

Overall, we need to give props to Mobil 1 for silencing the haters who say "its not approved anymore." Clearly, when keeping OCI low, BMW's LL classification is complete smoke and mirrors.

We'll see what the Liqui Moly does but this M1 has got to be the best combo of performance/value oil for our motors.

The listed elements are higher than universal averages, so how can that be good?

Yes the attachment says calcium 3035 measured versus 2340 universal average, so is that good or bad?

Calcium is an anti-corrosion additive. Too much calcium can lead to pre-ignition, especially with turbos. Boron is a detergent. Levels of more than 300 can indicate contamination of oil by coolant.

Those are antiwear additives/detergents. They're not be all end all because they're designed to complement the blend of oils. For example the M1 ESP 5w30 is arguably a higher quality product but has different types and amounts of additives.

BTW...Blackstone UOA don't test for all additive types so you don't want to rely on them for your oil choice.

It's irrelevant. Certain specs (API/ACEA) dictate additive levels and not all additives show up in a UOA.
