Im using an OEM rack with a 1Up bike tray and the wind noise is awful. Trying to avoid the fairing if possible. Was curious about the bungee cord hack....led me to this on another forum
the noise you hear on the highway is actually the flow separation coming off the back end of the bar and the air flows around it. reduce that effect and you reduce the noise. take a simple bungee cord and spiral wrap it around the front bar, with a spacing of about a foot between wraps. it's magic, and cheap. trust me. |

Fairing for OEM Rack?
I am interested in buying a roof fairing for the OEM BMW roof rack to improve look and reduce wind noise.
Does anybody have recommendations? I have seen the ones from Thule and I am not a huge fan of the look. Thank you |

I've got Thule Wingbar Edge and it's very quiet. I think that's the successor to the Aeroblade.
There is a difference in noise depending on how far forwards/backwards on the car they are fitted, and how close together the two bars are. I've got an F31 Touring so the bars can pretty much go anywhere on the roof rails, which allows for adjustment. Try adjusting where they are if possible, it might improve the noise.

Sorry missed this thread.
Jut a get a bungee cord... These things I mean, I guess they are the same name in the States? You simply wrap it around each bar, only need to go wrap round 2 or 3 times over the width of the bar, noise will stop completely. |

I recently got a set of OEM racks and had the same whistling issue. Following your suggestion here, I taped the locations to figure out where the noise is coming from. It was only happening to one of the foot. I was able to loose the two screws and moving the cross bar slightly forward to close the gap between the cross bar and the foot. This effectively eliminated the noise completely. My suggestions to anyone experiencing this issue to check the gaps between your cross bars and the four foots. Try to adjust it by losing and tightening the screws. It might just to the trick for you.

poem bars are the worst for noise, had them on 4 different bmws...all of them made a noise, even with those little wide deflectors on the under side, went with whispbars on my f31 and f36 and e61...not one whistle

on my suv, I do have the aero blade and yet it still making so much wind noise. so I guess it is inherent to the design. no matter what we add to the bar/racks it will always make a whistling sound.
