N20 Class Action Canada

Gents and Madames

Some back story.
I have a 2013 X3 with the N20 4 banger. In May the engine let go because of the timing guide. 123k on it....relatively low mileage considering.

We contacted BMW to sort this out cause a new engine is worth more than the vehicle and were basically told no.

So in the interim we sourced a used 2015 N20 with new guides, etc and had it installed.
Today I ran across a CA suit being considered by a firm out of London that targets this particular engine.

Good to know there is a lawsuit taking place on this issue in Canada. I hope people do their part and participate if they are experiencing this problem.

I was at BMW Toronto the other day and one of the staff were talking about the huge pile of "claims" they are currently dealing with. Not sure what that meant...hopefully in the owners favours.

Why just the N20 engine? N26 shares the same timing components as the N20.

Yeah, I'm in the same boat, except my car is 2012 and I bought it almost two years ago.

I'm interested in finding out more on this if possible.

The timing belt issue affected early N20/N26 engines and majority of those were mounted on early 328i since it was the only engine. N26 came out later and most included the updated timing belt as a running change

When the new F30 chassis BMW 328i was released in early 2012, all of them came with the 4 cylinder N20 engine. The N20 engine is rated as a Ultra Low Emissions Vehicle (ULEV).

However, starting around March 2012 build date, BMW started replacing the N20 engines with the N26 engine. The N26 engine is rated as a Super Ultra Low Emissions Vehicle (SULEV). There are 13 states that will have SULEV cars. They are California, Arizona, Conneticut, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont, Washington and the District of Columbia. Thus, 99% of the cars built after March 2012 in those states are N26 engines. While, the remaining states should have N20 engines

That's great info. However the N20/N26 are identical internally. It makes sense that the firm representing this case would list both motors if they are targeting timing chain failures, not just the N20.

The only thing that separates the two motors is emissions related components. The internal mechanics of the motors (timing components) are the same.

The point is to gather as many people that have the N20, whether it's in a 3 or an X3. Also the aim not to let BMW off the hook for the problems associated with the engine.

I'll let my brother read this. His 328i engine went bad too. Now the car been on the lots for months until we source new engine. Very expensive. Poor car still on the lot sitting and its in such good condition too. Sad. The damn engine and work is too expensive.
Bmw obviously wont help.

These class actions lawsuits never amount to much for the wronged. Lawyers pocket most of the money. The amount you'll be awarded will not be anywhere near enough for a new engine unfortunately.

Pretty much, only the lawyers win in class action suits lol.

What I am also not happy about is BMWCA not extending the warranty for the timing chain like BMWNA did for its customers.

I'd be happy with a warranty extension issued by BMW Canada. I'd rather have piece of mind than a bit of cash which likely wouldn't be enough to even cover the repair if it came to it.

In the US... we have an extended warranty related to this repair. All of us are covered until 70k miles (113k km).

Are you Canadian folk not covered under this extended warranty?
