Opening trunk

When you open the trunk the lid is supposed to "brake" by itself right?
I opened it today thinking it would go slowly up, but no... It came up like that chinese in Hangover. And the snow makes it so heavy it won't open by itself...

It's spring operated (as opposed to an actual actuator for example on the F10) , in cold weather or with snow on the trunk lid it will either open slowly or just a little bit.

There's no magic. It doesn't actively "brake". It just has somewhat soft bumpers to prevent it from bouncing back after it opens. No matter the type of car, you should clear the snow before you open the trunk. Otherwise it'll all slide off the trunk lid, onto the window and down into your trunk. Sometimes you just need to put in the extra effort to actually lift the lid yourself. I know, shocking for a car that costs this much.

Yeah, you'd think a $125.000 car could open the trunk and make it go slow and steady to avoid damage... Well, I guess I just have to help the car with that one..

My wife's MINI S does not fully open when I press the button on the fob. It's quite annoying as I have to perform two motions (press button and lift trunk). I prefer the F30 (one swipe of the foot or one push of the button).

I am not sure of what damage you are speaking of. You would have to physically force it up as fast as you can to damage it... that poor little spring barely lifts it up (without snow) as is. No way there is going to be any damage.

I take manual trunk lids over mechanical ones that get pissed off when you try to close them manually, but others may like the 5 series automagic stuff.

For my car its a bit odd. If I hit the button on the remote the trunk pops open by itself. If I do the foot swipe the trunk unlocks and tries to open but gets stuck and i have to tap it lightly to get it to open.

Any ideas as why it would do that ? It's such a small thing and really not a big deal, I don't think I would even bother bringing it up to the dealer unless I am in for service. 90% of the time I am using my remote anyways cause it was like that on my last car.

It's the same latch no matter how you activate it. It shouldn't act differently with the remote or CA.

Just wanted to add something of value here.

The 2014 MY trunks seemed to be dampened when you open the trunk. Therefore it'll "brake" as you call it.

My 2013 MY trunk just swings open like a jack in a box. Will be bringing it up with service once my parts actually come in... been 4 weeks now...

Hmm, mine goes up smoothly as well. If you look in the ETK/realoem there's the spring AND gas dampener on the mechanism.

That's exactly what I heard when I opened the trunk of the '14, something I don't hear in our '13.

Definitely will be bringing it up. It also should be noted that with the '14s, they have an extra clip for the trunk liner to prevent it from rubbing against the hinge, an issue with '13s. That I got implemented under warranty.

Update

Figured I'd update on this.

Brought up with Service Advisor, observed the 2014 MY loaners they had and compared to mine. Got the technician to look at it and confirm there's a difference given those 2014 MY are nice and slow/dampened while mine, you hear the gas strut but it isn't really doing it's job. RO comment "Strut is weak".

New trunk strut on order as of 3 weeks ago. Still waiting along with a few other parts (Germany...)

Will let you know how it goes once it gets replaced.

The amount of cheapening bmw allows in the 3 series is just beyond me. These cars cost way too much to have these shitty manual trunks.

I was a little dismayed that my '12 trunk swings fully open rather quickly and un-damped. It makes me not want to pop open the trunk unless I'm standing there to catch it.

I also noticed the right side trunk liner rubs the hinge. If I bring my '12 in and say something, is there a solution out there that the dealer can implement for me? Will they also add a strut?

Actually looking at the diagram there is a strut (#3) even for the '12 model year:

I'll be calling the dealer to look into this.

In regards to the clips that prevent the liner from rubbing, they first ordered new carpet pieces but they didn't come with the clips. However based on the RO, I believe they don't really have a "part number" for it so I'm not too sure where the service manager got the clips from, but they did put it in my car.

For the strut, there is one present and you can hear it. But the strut seems to either not be adjusted properly or just something is wrong with the early struts, given there is one but it doesn't do it's job properly.

As mentioned, will update when the replacement strut arrives

Dude these cars don't cost $125,000. It's a $40,000 car ... with some options. It's just that you guys get totally ripped off buying them. You guys also probably pay $80,000 or $90,000 for a ford focus. What do you guys pay for a pack of gum up there? $2,000?

Move to 'murica! Heck yeah!

(Just don't come to the northeast. It's expensive here too).
