Summer road trip in the making

It all goes to plan and travel is allowed this year I am planning a fairly major road trip for me and the family , we road trip most years but this one could turn in to a fairly epic one

The first section will be from Calais down to Karlsruhe in Germany , we have a lovely hotel booked there called the Aviva, we have stayed here before rooms are really nice and big , well kept etc.parking is nice and secure but the best bit is they serve proper German beer from a weird beer pump in the foyer !
From there it’s a blast down past Munich and hanger 7 , the red bull museum time depending we might call in but did visit two years ago .
Then on past the crows nest which I would like to visit but need to convince the wife and kids on that one !
Ending up in a remote village in the Austrian Alps called Sankt Peter am kamersberg where will stay for four nights

Last leg of the trip will be over the alps in to Italy , ultimately arriving at the resort town of Grado which is an ancient bath town, the route from Austria to here will almost certainly take in a section of Slovakia and Croatia even if just to say we have been there ( the sub 1e fuel will be a bonus)

Images are from the last trip to Germany and the same place in Austria , that is car in one pic

Proper plan, proper holiday, and a proper post with some great pics!

Sounds great and here's hoping the situation allows you to do it.

Sounds great ...hopefully UK will be unbanned and C19 may be behind us by then. Plan to go over myself. Bavaria and Austria are beautiful.

So 4 nights in Sankt Peter...i have not heard of before what is there or is it like etc?

Hi there.
Sounds like a nice trip.
The crows nest is definitely worth a visit.
Been there a few years ago.
The views from the top is great👍😊

We are staying in a glamming tent there, no much to do apart from proper chill out with some nice food and drink (Bella Austria is the site name)
This is the last time we visited , plenty of walking and cycling can be done locally
It’s not far from the redbull ring which also has a motorsport museum that the wife would like to visit so that’s on the cards
My son wants a ride in a cable car to the top of the mountain and some proper snow

I am single and still struggle to justify that sort of trip! you need to look after your other half OP!

Trying to talk the youngsters into Eurocamp this summer, daughter will have a GLE 7 seater by then so suggesting they fly and I drive so we have a car when we get there...

Failing that, I'll find a companion and drive down to south of france, germany, Italy or maybe Dubrovnik for a road trip. I have a friend who runs best hotel co in dubrovnik (let me know if you fancy it ) so that might be a plan. RS4's must be the perfect long distance muncher...

If you're getting to Karlsruhe, you could consider a vist to the Technic Museum at Sinsheim https://sinsheim.technik-museum.de/en/how-to-reach There is also one at Speyer.

I've been to both and some fantastic vehicles there from all over the world. I won't bore you but everyone likes pictures so a couple attached. A trip to the castle at Heidelberg is also worthwhile as you drive South.

That’s looks really good but alas with the train we have booked we won’t be arriving until around 7pm ( unless I can alter the train that is)
We are staying in Stuttgart on the way back , a five minute walk from the Porsche museum , so I’ll either leave wife and kids to go find a park or they can join me

Looks like a good trip there planned Rich76

Hoping '21 will, at some point, allow me to start travelling also, as travelling is very much required for what I do for a living (have had no work since early '20)...

Generally, plans are made as business requires, and until I know that, I have no real plans...

I do have one ambition, however, and that is to get up to Alaska, as that will complete the 50/50 for me as far as the US states is concerned...

Also, a good friend has just moved to Hawaii, so it'd rather rude not to visit...

Good luck with the upturn in business and travelling....

Which part of Hawaii? I've done three islands and have to say, its a bloody long way and I dont feel the need to rush back (but I have to go for work from time to time so its bearable when business class and someone else paying!)

Fair enough, it would be a lot to get in to a prepared schedule, but maybe one for another time... or stay an extra day

Anyway sounds like a great road trip.

I have already been to Hawaii (Maui and O'ahu) but the object of going would not be to explore there, but to see go good, long-term friend... and I would spend time in LA on route there/back, as I have many friends there and can always find time/reason to be there...

Thanks for the best wishes as regards work etc...

I liked Maui, not so sure about Waikiki. North of island better. I go to Molokai which is proper undeveloped paradise - unless you want a hotel and somewhere to eat, which gets challenging when you are there for 10 days!

Love LA - especially Santa Monica.

Congrats on almost 50 states. Kind of surprised that Alaska was left til last, although there are some obvious logistical advantages to doing so.

Wow 50 States is amazing, I thought I was doing well having visited 33, many Americans have only visited their adjacent States and quite a few have never been out of their State.......a bit like people that live in Yorkshire I suppose

Think we have proved its the hampshire wallers that are the problem...... Mind if you live in Yorkshire you probably have no desire to go anywhere else, if you live in Hants you are probably desperate to go and chat to some nice people....

In many ways, Alaska is easy.. Jump on a plane at LAX and, with a hop through Seattle or something, you can be up there in a few hours... I found some of the others required a considerable commitment to making an effort...

But... Man, have seen some amazing things along the way...

Easy, Tiger...

I have to be honest and say that there are some of the States that I'll probably never re-visit, but I have seen enough of some others to be planning further explorations when I can... It can require a serious commitment to wanting to do some of it (unless you are a billionaire and can simply get a helicopter or something to fly you around on a whim)...

33 is really good... What ones are you missing...?

You can make a graphic of it here:

I could happily stay within the boundaries of the North York Moors National Park if I were forced to confine myself somewhere...
