They should at least flash the ecu with factory settings. I'm sure if they looked at the logs it could show whether the signal came from the key vs inside the car but I doubt they would spend that kind of time.

Random trunk opening is a common BMW problem.
You know it's common because when you talk to a dealer they'll say something stupid like "Gee, we've never seen that before". I had it happen once when my car was parked several blocks away from where the key was. I also have it happen routinely when I'm spray washing the car. It has nothing to do with accidentally pressing the key fob. BMW has a written procedure that they think fixes the problem. See SI B51 30 16 Tailgate Unintentionally Opens I had the local stealership follow the instructions in the SI above, basically reprogramming the trunk opening to a two button process on the key fob. Guess what? It didn't solve the problem. My trunk still opens by itself. I can tell you this, I'd never store anything valuable in the car and I'd never take it through a car wash. podman Last edited by Mr Podman; 05-11-2019 at 09:13 AM.. |

I don't see the lights flash either...wouldn't that indicate that the car is unlocked and the trunk was opened from inside? Maybe my 4 series is different...

That one, your dealer should be able to solve for you. I had the same problem with the foot sensor (different from OP's problem because it only happens when you have the key near the trunk). They replaced the sensor under warranty and it's been perfect since.

Turn on the valet mode by moving the switch in the glove box. This will disable the comfort access for the trunk as a temporary fix. As well as disable the trunk release in the driver footwell. May stop it from opening until it is fixed.

Scan for codes, you might have
U02019 - Integrated Automated Proton Pack (IA-PP) Pump Control Failure: Ectoplasmic Capacity Exceeded According to ISTA the repair procedure is always to replace the IA-PP but in the meantime it gives these instructions: 1. Disconnect negative battery terminal. 2. Create a 30mm thick salt perimeter outside of the vehicle 3. Smudge the vehicle using either white sage or red cedar 4. Put 5 1ml drops of holy water on the trunk lid 5. Reconnect negative battery terminal and lock car 6. Call ghost busters

I had a similar problem on a 5 series years ago. it was a faulty sensor. it would only happen when driving without the central locking activated as the locking overrode the fault. I can't remember what BMW called the sensor but it was cheap and quick to replace.

This problem has plagued BMW for many years over many of their models.
The formal fixes that BMW has developed including SI B51 30 16 Tailgate Unintentionally Opens don't solve the problem. Enabling the valet lock in the glove box isn't a solution to the problem. BMW has no solution to the problem. podman Last edited by Mr Podman; 05-11-2019 at 09:14 AM.. |
