I did some IAT testing with the CTS intake. Came to the conclusion that it doesn't really affect it. Your intercooler makes the biggest difference.

It does come with a heat shield. And the stock ducting is still in place to draw air from the front grill. All you are removing is the stock tubing (which contains the DV silencer) and air box. You think a plastic box will hold out heat that much better? An open element draws more air into the engine than any box can. The inside of the engine is still a lot hotter than anything around the outside.

No point in debating. Not a fan of the open element. I have done my own testing on other cars. That was a rotary and they run hot in the engine bay!

The post by burger is interesting for this car.

And yes I do think the plastic helps. Its its own environment with its own air source thats rushing thru it. Its going to stay cooler in there then vs open engine bay.

Why dont factories go to open element?

Probably because of the threat of hydrolock with bozos driving thru water.

Did you actually read the Burger article? It clearly shows that it makes next to 0 difference.

Anyone have further insight into the sound aspect?

Easy... money, emissions, noise control, a bunch of reasons. Plastic being cheaper than aluminum tubing square filters being cheaper than cone, etc.

The sound difference is absolutely crazy.. I have never had any aftermarket CAI sound like this.. the dramatic woosh/rush is quite a surprise the first time, and you can sure tell when you get on it from sound alone.

Then don't waste time with the intake and get a DP and flash tune.

Yea. I'll admit I mostly went with the intake for the sound. That and the reason CTS promised no CEL. Not to mention the price point is pretty good compared to other intakes on the market which throw codes. I'm FBO now with Fabspeed catted dp, ER Intercooler and Charge pipe, Active Autowerke axle back. And the car definitely feels faster than before. Just trying to decide on a flash tune now.

Yea. the tune question is so tough but so important. It's evolving real time. It probably makes sense to wait until spring time to make a decision. Although I am like 95% getting a custom tune. The reason being is that it seems people just aren't making good power in Fbo. So if I can squeeze an additional 10-15whp from a custom tune over an OTS flash it's worth it

I am new here and I can say This forum is interesting. The people seem so fixated on sounds Burbles etc. I hardily see any dynos or 1/4 times. I see more topics around sounds and aestics than actual hp gains. I will say the people here are kind and offer advice and the bs attacking seems far and few between. It's a mature crowd. My hunch is these cars just aren't fast so the focus is on other stuff.

Oh another thing. I am shocked to see how little people are focused on boost levels. People are talking afr and timing. Blows my mind

Anyways I am getting this thing for the sound. It's cheap as hell and it's a fun install project.

When I was in my teens we used to flip the top of the air filter on our 4 barrel carbs over for the same effect. These days I don't find the loud sucking sound all that appealing.

But then I did spend a silly amount of money on an exhaust for little more than what I felt was just the right sound.

To each his own I guess.

That's for sure. To me it's not mostly the suction noise as much as it is the air venting sound of the diverter valve that only comes on forced induction cars.

Thought I'll throw my two cents in.

I have FBO with BMS intake, catless DP, and MHD tune.

Firstly, the catless DP gave me the perfect balance as far as exhaust sound is concerned. Burbles, downshift pops, nice growl at WOT, and no drone (actually, there IS some drone if cruising @ >3000rpm but only in sports mode). But not obnoxiously loud or ricer fartcannish at all. I can comfortably cruise through with city driving without getting dirty looks.

Second, the BMS intake gives that lovely turbo whoosh, but only in a sweet spot between 2000-3000 rpm (reckon above that it gets drowned out by the exhaust sound). The MHD tune made that whoosh a little louder, but still not obnoxiously loud. The best part is that since the whoosh is most pronounced at 2k-3k rpm, I can produce it at will whilst city driving just by giving a mild push on the throttle (such as when sheilas happen to be walking the sidewalks )...a sure head turner, but in a non-douchebag way!
