N57 2013 330d Engine mechanical whine
Hey,
New here and an amateur first post. In short, I have a 2013 F31 330d BMW with 192k km driven. Last month I had a 5k km roadtrip. On the way back, at a stop I noticed a very slight whine / mechanical sound which I'm sure I hadn't noticed before. Here's the link: The car had a service prior to departure with no issues. Oil was perfect etc. No errors prior nor after the trip. My mechanic said he didn't notice any sound. It is slightly intermittent and you might miss it if you don't know what to listen. I've been told it might just be the phantom sounds of a diesel engine. But I've understood it can also be the high pressure fuel pump? Everything seems to be running perfectly. Smooth idle, Instant starts, no noticable power loss. Am I paranoid or is there something I should ask my mechanic to check further? Last edited by Chris311281; 09-21-2020 at 04:49 PM.. Alternators make whines on F chassis most often

So is my alternator going or is this normal?
I found another thread that seems similar yet they didn't seem to resolve it either :/ https://f30.bimmerpost.com/forums/sh....php?t=1449980 |

It doesn't mean much until it gets properly diagnosed.
Remove accessory belt temporarily and see if it goes away. It could be a roller/pulley or alternator or something else. |

It's most likely the AC pump. Remembered the other thread today and turned the AC off and voila! the sound was gone. Going to get it diagnosed.
Thanks for the quick replies! |
