Car things you used to do but wouldn’t now
Ordered 2 new rear tyres for the car to the tune of £440 ish.
Made me laugh as when I was a student I spent all of my loan on a Renault 19 16v, my dad’s business was car sales and repair so when I wore a tyre out I’d just stick on a mismatch of part worn cheap rubber, the car probably never drove right and I was always going far too fast but thankfully nobody died I’d never dream of doing that now as probably the most important safety aspect of a car is the contact patch on the road. Also DTM straight through exhaust |

Looking at how other folk drive these days I'd expect the most common answer would be… overtake

First car I bought was a '72 Triumph Spitfire with a knackered clutch - car could barely make it up a hill. Spent the second day of ownership transplanting a 2nd-hand clutch from a donor engine into it. Slackened off all the bell housing bolts and jacked up the engine to make a big enough space to get the old clutch plate out and do the swap. Wouldn't have a bloody clue with a modern car!

The thought of polishing the car, let alone wax it makes me break out in a cold sweat

My first car was a shagged out 1972 Morris Marina. Over the three years I owned it, I stripped down & rebuilt the engine, gearbox & pretty much every moving part. Can’t imagine doing that with a modern car.

When I worked in Edinburgh (and lived at Maddiston), I drove from there to my parents in Neasden non-stop.
Journey time was 4hrs - this was back in 1998 so before any cameras and there were no police on the motorways overnight. Back then I had an L reg Cavalier SRi. |

Driving around with my front fog lights on for no reason other than I thought it looked cool.
It was so cool, many years later the government made it a thing and called it day time running lights! |

Making stupid driving decisions :
Purchased first car a MK1 Escort 1300E (purple with black vinyl roof) for £80 , had to get it from Johnstone center to my mates house at Johnstone Castle around one mile up the road , my dad offered to drive it for me but it told him i would get the seller to drop it off. I didnt and took the "chance" , after 90s i T boned a MK2 Escort at a junction and wrote it off and caused considerable damage to the side of the other car. Police turned up and had a field day , no licence / insurance / MOT / tax / careless driving etc / etc. If i had been over the limit then it would have been the full set. Never again , just not worth the risk. The worst (most painful) part was explaining to dad what had happened. K Last edited by Kendo67; 10-17-2021 at 04:41 AM.. |

I get the impression that as society dumbs down, driving as a skill/craft no longer exists. |
