High Speed brake shudder
Hey all,
Wanted to pick your brain about a unique brake shudder I am experiencing recently. Car brakes nice and smooth 90% of the time. No issues when daily driving around town, no issues with hard braking from lower speeds, no issues when easy braking at high speeds on the highway. However, if i try to bite hard on brakes at let's say 90+ mph the car will brake smoothly the first time, less smooth the second, etc. BY the 4th or 5th hard brake it's a rather substantial shudder. Feeling the shudder in the pedals and seat. Currently have OEM pads/rotors all around. Brake fluid service 6 months ago, rear pads and rotors 20k ago, front pads (no rotors) about 20k ago as well. Initial thought is that heavy braking is causing lots of brake dust from the oem pads and it is sticking to the pad and creating the shudder. But I can't understand why the shudder wouldn't be present in any other situation. Other thought is that its heat related because, as noted, the shuddering only happens with multiple hard braking from speed. Anyone else have any other thoughts? Was going to replace pads/rotors in the spring time anyway but wanted to get others opinions. Thanks in advance, Nick

It is possible it is heat related as you stated. When is the last time the caliper guide pins were lubricated? I would clean them up, re-grease and test out the brakes again.

This happens to me as well when i hit the brakes at very high speed (over 150mph) or if i do so repeatedly over 100mph. Zero issues under other conditions, so i assume it is heat related as well. Also on OEM pads and rotors, Msport brakes (2015 335i). I wouldnt worry about it.

Probably a year or so. I'll do a solid clean and re-grease when I swap over to my minter tires in November.

Heat alone wouldn't cause this unless the heat is amplifying an existing issue such as sticking pins as noted above, or possibly an issue with a caliper piston. I do a lot of "spirited" driving and repeated hard braking from high speeds (sometimes up to 140+) and never experience any kind of shutter or vibration, and I'm also on oem pads and rotors.
