2014 328d Smoke from engine / fuel system issue
Hi guys, sorry for the long post.
Four weeks ago I was driving when my 2014 328d with 40,300 miles displayed a drivetrain malfunction warning. The screen said "reduced power drive moderately" so I continued to drive home, shortly after I heard a pop and the car stalled. Ended up having the car brought to the dealer who diagnosed the problem as a low pressure fuel pump failure caused by rust on the pump and in the tank which lead to the high pressure fuel pump failing. Dealer said a fuel system replacement was required. Car is out of warranty. Total repair took about three weeks and cost a little over $8,000. My car insurance covered most of the bill under a comprehensive claim, I was required to pay the cost of the low pressure fuel pump and my deductible. Two days after getting my car back from the dealer, I was driving when I smelled something burning and all of a sudden smoke started coming inside the car through the vents and a lot of smoke started coming out from under the hood. I quickly pulled over and turned the car off. The fire department ended up coming out to check the car and said the smoke was caused by engine oil leaking all over the motor and the exhaust. I had the car towed back to the dealer and I saw a small puddle of oil on the ground where the car was and a small puddle on the tow truck. They said it looked like the leak was coming from the left side of the engine. Any idea what could be leaking? Any advice would be greatly appreciated! |

When the high pressure fuel pump was replaced, it's very close to the oil filter housing/oil cooler. That comes to mind first. I would verify that. Or rather the dealer that did the work.

Agreed: have it towed back to the dealer who worked on it. They're required to warranty their work for 12k miles or 1 year in most states, so whatever they touched while working on your car would be on their dime. That goes for anything they disassembled and reassembled or moved out of the way and put back.
And I would also start a claim with BMWNA to let them know which dealer this was at; they may be able to provide added leverage. Good luck, keep us posted.

Was there any answer as to what happened there? I just had my fuel pumps replaced and now, a few days later after my wife got home, smelled the burning oil. looks like it is dripping onto the catalytic converter. I'm going to wash it off to see if it was just residual from the work being done, but would like to know what the dealer said. Thanks!
