B58 Spark Plug Change Labor Cost

I have asked a few reputable Indy BMW shops for quotes on spark plugs labor. They are all quoting 2-2.5 hours or $300+ for the labor and refuse to budge..

What gives? Do they know they are ripping people off? They obviously must know the book is wrong and the jobs take 20-60 minutes depending on technician.

Unless these reputable shops have somehow never done B58 plugs because everyone does them themselves after getting their insane quotes?

Driving me crazy. I’d do them myself but free time is valuable to me and I would rather have the peace of mind / build a relationship with a good shop since I’m tuned.

Brotha....Plugs on the B58 is borderline the easiest job you can do with the car. I'd go as far to say it's less of a headache then doing an oil change yourself.

If you want the shop to do it - gonna have to pay book time. You are correct that this is why a lot of us DIY it. Gotta decide if 300 bucks is worth at most an hour of your time.

I'd rather the piece of mind of knowing it was done right by doing it myself. Saving $$$ is frosting on the cake.

i was in same boat a few years back, i could easily do spark plugs as a DIY, but I wanted to find a BMW shop I could trust. called a few places some quoted me insane amounts and were angry that I wanted to provide my own plugs. Others wanted me to leave the car overnight even. Eventually I found a nice shop through PMing someone on these forums, they quoted me a fair amount like 80 bucks or so, and another 40 for an oil change. Did great work and I knew if I needed future shop work I could trust them. I went back to doing most non-fluid related maintenance and installs myself but it was a great litmus test.

so in short, keep doing more research and find a shop that won't rip you off on this job, so you can trust them on a more serious job that's not easy to DIY, next time.
