MOT brake advisory leaking brake caliper

hi all

i went to get my MOT today. no issues except one advisory

he said the rear brakes were starting to show wear and are fine for now. however he said that he noticed there was brake fluid leaking through the caliper. he said when i get the brakes done asked to get this checked. could this be a rubber seal or O ring?

thanks in advance

Could be a seal or o-ring or damage to the piston or scoring. Solution will be to replace calliper in any event. I wouldn’t bother trying to repair it. It would need stripping down and might end up being unrepairable.

What brakes have you got?

If they're the blue M Sport ones you can buy a re-seal kit and/or have them refurbished

Hi,

There are repair kits that you can buy with all the seals and piston. It can be a bit tricky to refurbish a caliper if you have never done it before.

Picking up on the advisory, if it was actually leaking it should have been a major/dangerous fail which per the rules here in 1.1.16:

https://www.gov.uk/guidance/mot-insp...section-1-1-14

Makes me wonder if it was actually an issue in the first place?

Not sure which side but you can pick them up for around £200 odd 2nd hand https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/144060268...#38;media=COPY

But probably cost you less to have it refurbished with new seals and a new paint job.

Agree with this. The words 'Leaking Caliper' would scare the crap out of me and it definitely doesn't sound safe. Any fluid leaking from a shock absorber is a fail, so a brake calliper should be a slam dunk Major/Dangerous!

I wonder if there was some anti-seize that has separated and run?

hi all, i thought i would update you.
my friend and I removed rear wheel to inspect.

at the top of the caliper there is bleed valve nipple type bolt what looks like its leaking.
we pumped the brakes to see if any fluid oozes out but we couldn't see any.

conclusion is we think that whoever did the last brake install either, overtightened this valve stripping the thread, or under tightened it. as we didn't have any tools on us we didn't try, but caliper not leaking by the pistons

thanks

Could hopefully just be that. Maybe spray some brake cleaner on it and give it all a good clean up then check back on it a week or so later. That’ll help confirm things.
