Stage 1 thoughts

I have a 2015 328i GT and absolutely love it. I wish it was just a little faster which is why I've been considering going stage 1 bootmod3. If anyone is stage 1 please let me know your thoughts and if you think it was worth it. My 328i runs perfectly right now and I don't want a stage 1 tune to cause all sorts of problems. I also would like to know if I should upgrade my chargepipe if I do decide to get tuned. I heard OEM 335/340i chargepipes crack if you go stage 1 but will my OEM 328i chargepipe crack?

BM3 Stage 1 is a safe bet and requires no hardware modifications. Continue to maintain the car properly (regular oil changes, dont abuse when cold) and run the best fuel you can find ALWAYS. Im FBO and run only top tier 93 fuel on the 91 tune. Car runs like a top.

Tossing in a fresh set of NGK 97506 with stock gap is probably a good idea depending on your mileage.

No issues at all on my n26 328. I always fill 93 anyway. I haven't changed any hardware at all, not even my charge pipe. I'm only stage 1 though. It's definitely way better than stock. And some subtle burbles isn't so bad either.

I'm going to tune my 328i GT this weekend after buying the stage 1 bootmod3 tune during the Black Friday sale. VERY much looking forward to what it will do to the car. I'll report back with my experience

I was so excited for Black Friday and waited a whole year to buy BM3 for 15% off. And then on Thanksgiving I watched two negative N26 tune reviews (THAT I SHOULDNT HAVE WATCHED) and I decided not to buy it. But please let me know how you like the stage 1 tune. I'm sure you'll love it and will have no issues. Did you get a charge pipe too?

I guess the videos weren't really reviews but in the first vid the guys intake exploded and put a hole in the engine block. It was a hot day and the intake couldn't handle the high boost I guess. He records the experience in this vid

The second guy is a sorta well known bmw YouTuber (RAD BAVARIAN) who had a 320i and now has 440i. He has a bunch of vids about how BM3 is great. He thinks it's risky for N20/N26 motors in general. He also thinks it's risky to tune your N20/N26 if the car's a 2013 or older because of the timing guide issue.

https://youtube.com/shorts/tfbD4Jo5Cv8?feature=share

I definitely think BM3 is the best tuning platform. But I think it performs much better on bigger engines like the N55, B58, etc. I've talked to many people who have 328i that said BM3 is well worth the money. However, I'm not willing to tune my 328i because my car is operating very smoothly atm. I don't want to discourage anyone from getting it for their N20/N26 because it's just my own personal opinion. You will definitely see me using BM3 on one of my future BMWs when I get a B58 beast or something haha.

i see. there is nothing in the world that is 100%, so there are couple things that bm3 fails due to other parts failure.

some of my friends have failed bm3 due to oil pump failure that cause oil starve and cracked pistons. could it be prevented? probably, if every oil change, the owner asks the mechanic to check it.

in that case, the most important point to check is the failure rate. if you have something that is over 90% success rate, so it's a good product. 95% is even better.

for n20, before doing bm3, he could have invest on timing chain replacement first. as of me, before i flash bm3, i do all the changes required to minimize failure (changing pipes for example). i don't need timing chain replacement cause my car is late pre lci production after 2015. but i still ask my mechanic to always check timing chain everytime the car is due oil change.

don't cheap out on your car just because you wanna go fast. do your HW first and replace everything necessary first.

Yes, there has always been the notion that the 328i N20 is already quite powerful as it is so adding a tune may cause some stress on the charge pipe but the guy in this video strikes me as too much "dude" "yo" "wassa" to form an opinion on whether or not to use a stage 1 tune. Who know what else went on with that car and how he drove it around town, not to mention the fuel he used. I feel sorry for him to blow his engine like that but I will still go ahead with my stage 1 tune without changing any other parts.

No doubt the coil pack and probably the coils themselves may need replacing earlier than usual and I have them ready anyway.

We shall see.

Quick update: Decided to order charge pipe kit first. Mainly because it’s on sale at my tuner and hey, may as well get this part as it seems rather integral and bound to fail. My car is a 2013 with 140000km so it needs to be looked after 😀

So things changed again due to lack of stock for charge pipes. I have flashed my GT to stage1 93 without changing any parameters of the tune. It’s been golden. The car is just so much better to drive and while I will still do the charge, boost and turbo intake pipe goin forward I certainly enjoy the stage1 tune without even pushing the car. It just responds so much better across the whole range and in any drive modes from comfort to sport+.

Driving around clocking up 700km so far with the tune.

I have a set of coils and plugs at the ready but again that is mostly because the car has done 142000km and replacing them will no doubt be on the cards anyway.

Next project will be M sports breaks but that is a bit of an expensive undertaking. Oh well, you only live once…
