The check engine light itself is related to the system picking up that the def system is not working optimally. This could be either that the def in there is low quality (common), or a sensor is starting to go (slightly less common).

I would refill with very high quality def and see what happens in a week.
You may have to reset def adaptations, if your tool does it.

I just add a gallon of DEF in the car reset the code and drive for few miles and it didn't came back. I will keep my fingers that it was just a low DEF level. Thanks for your help

No no, a low level will not trigger check engine light! It will however give you countdown to no start.

Bad/diluted DEF will give you the errors above, and sometimes a failing NOx sensor.

Might want to check the tip of the metering valve into the exhaust. It is prone to a crusty buildup.

Since i just add new DEF il will see if it gonna help the quality of the mixture. It was filled during my last service i don't know which DEF they put in. A NOx sensor is probable since i already had one changed under warranty. I will keep an eye to see if the Check engine light turn on again.

Well i guess it was too easy Check engine light is back. I went to see the nox sensors readout and both of them showing very high value. Could they just be dirty and not read propely? The remplacement cost is over 1000$ for one of them the other is close to 700$ plus labor.

The Nox sensors are $300 USD each new.

What are your codes now?

What makes you think the signal is high?

Did you empty the DEF tank and put high quality DEF in?

It doesn't sound like you've properly diagnosed the problem fully yet.

For the code i didn't went for a full scan yet but the code from the 2nd picture was there again.

The def tank was already low last time i was due for an oil change so the dealer fill it with there Bmw oem def i guess:

I will perform a full scan tommorow in order to investigate further.

When i went with my device to read the different value from the NOX sensor both of them where showing 65000+ ppm which seem like to be the limit they can read.

Ok, that is good info.

I am curious if the Canadian cars qualify for www.bmw-rp.com
US cars have those sensors covered by extended warranty.

For a BMW/diesel newbie here, other than OEM what do you consider high quality DEF brands?

VW OE DEF. It's cheap too. Just go down to your local VW dealer to buy it.

The 1.89L bottle with fill adapter (PN G052910A2) is $4.84 MSRP and their 10L jug (PN G052910A4) is only $7.84 MSRP. Cheaper than the stuff at Walmart.

When I needed to fill my DEF I bought one of the bottles with fill adapters, then after emptying it, drilled a hole in the side so I could put the spout from the 10L jug in there and keep using it as a fill adapter.

That's what my BT scanner says a 4D16 code is. Usually comes with another code to point to an area of the DEF/SCR system. Usually is a temperature problem (thermostat or too low engine load for complete regen), DEF injector/metering valve, NOx sensors or a couple other things. The SCR system checks for efficiency at the completion of a DPF regeneration.

4D16 is discussed quite a bit in the e9x diesel forum, and in the bimmerfest diesel forum.

I wouldn't go much by what recommendations the first gen diesel (M57) systems had, since it's very different from second generation (N47/N57). There are a lot of improvements with the newer engines and accessories.

FWIW those are the codes that ended up with me having both NOX sensors replaced.

The system that runs the DEF system has changed, but the OBD codes are almost certainly the same. And the COMPONENTS of the DEF system are essentially the same; check the documents for the two.

Any DEF that meets ISO 22241-1 spec will be fine. PEAK BlueDEF does, but the generic Walmart stuff doenst state it.

Thanks for your help guys i will try to see if there is any extended warranty on nox sensor in Canada. I already had one changed under warranty so i guess it's going to be a regular thing.
