New golf gti and x3m40i

Now bear with me they are related of sorts..
I was taken for a spin in a new standard golf got today. It had a lovely interior and with a few toys was a nice place to be. The performance was very mediocre though and fake sound was awful.
Coming from a tweaked 340 with near 400bhp it's to be expected I know but it did get me thinking at what level could I drop to in performance now for a new car?

This related to the new x3 as I find myself liking it and I have been a staunch anti 4x4 person for years.
I would dearly love an rs4 but being realistic they are going to be too pricey so would a x3 m40i be sufficient if I tuning boxed that as well?

Seems family friendly enough and more so that the f31 probably, yes pricier but how much will the new g series m340i cost as there will be lower discounts than the x3 I'd imagine by then?

Obviously a golf r wagon would fit the bill as well but meh.

Terrible these first world problems...

What about an S4 Avant ?

That's assuming you want a Hearse size.

Or there is S3 / S4 saloons.

I can tell you more about the M40 when I get mine in 2 weeks.

Have you had a look at the X3 forum?

http://x3.xbimmers.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=666

May give you more of an insight of the car.

Let me know if you need to know anything about the X3.

I currently have a 330d. I took a huge gamble and ordered M40i without being able to get a test drive. Did a lot of research on line - think it will be a big step up!

I will let you know what it’s like!

For a family suv wagon my first choise would be a SQ5, no doubt the M40 will drive better... but in a car like a that no matter what fancy trick diffs they put in still wont feel sporty due to the driving position.

It depends if you want a car that handles? The 3 series is already too tall and heavy, but any SUV will make a 3 series feel like a sports car!

Interesting. So if neither is sporty like a sports car...why is the SQ5 so much better?

I assume he means if it isn't going to be sporty buy an Audi - maybe because it won't be sporty or perhaps for the refinement or interior ambience.

I have an SQ5 - I didn't buy it for the sporty drive, I wanted a quick, refined, discrete, petrol SUV, it ticked the boxes for me at my budget

Curious. How is an S4 boring compared to an X3? Both were on my list for a while until I realised X3 offered nothing over an S4 other than an extra £10k (after current discounts)

That's just my thoughts tbh and not having driven either! I just think the s4 will be too similar to the 340 rightly or wrongly and I'm not drawn to it like the rs4. Doubtless a very nice car and I may love it once driven and hate the x3, it's just I seem to like the new x3 for some reason.

Who knows and I've got a long time to pontificate and may end up with a golf R estate anyway!

Yeah pretty much as neither are sporty go for comfort.... and the cabin, quilted leather and interior tech, digital cockpit etc on the Audi are far supirior to the BMW.

Also B&O sound option beats the HK.

I think if you want a sport(ish) SUV only option is the Maccan, sadly i cant convince the wife she needs one

Is that because

a) It's been nicked?
b) It's trying to run off and hide, ashamed of it's looks ?

Whilst I know it's a great car, both of the above have meant it's off my list

You would only buy a golf r estate because of the deals that can be had on them on lease. Got to be one of the ugliest cars in standard form and made even uglier by the 'R' treatment!

Don't care how it drives. It's not going to drive like a mclaren! Or a Ferrari in your case! respect for the California though mate!
