Hailstone Damage

As probably some of you guys have experienced today the weather has been somewhat changeable - I'm in Northamptonshire and the hail stones were almost golf ball sized - as a result my is now covered in dents from this!

Has anyone had any experience or know what the implications of claiming on insurance for these damages is, act of god, loss of no claims etc-

Well and truly ruined my Sunday!

Loss of no claims guaranteed as your insurer won't be able to get their costs back. If its the entire car its not going to be a cheap fix!

If you have gap cover maybe try for a write off and get a positive from a negative...

Paintless dent removal is the best option, hopefully it will only cost a few hundred quid .. depending on the number of dents I guess.

A quick google search shows that even quite badly affected cars can be restored using pointless dent removal. Depending on how many dents though it might not be cheap.

it is possible to replace a roof. My neighbour had deer land on his and they cut the roof out and replaced it - long story.
I'm guessing if it's hail damage you'll have the bonnet and boot to do as well though.

Loss of no claims is not guaranteed. If you are insured by Direct Line they have a fair claims commitment where you don't lose no claims even if they cannot recover money from anybody. They list these circumstances and I'd be surprised if hail didn't come under either flood or debris.
  • Hit whilst parked
  • Potholes or poor road maintenance
  • Theft of the car, or from the car
  • Flood damage
  • If you hit or are hit by a wild/domestic animal
  • Hit by an object or debris (excluding vehicles)

If you're not insured by Direct Line they loss of no claims is likely unless you have protected it.

I had this happen to me several years ago. There were some companies offering no loss of NCD, and I thought my insurers at the time would do the same, but when I called them they said I would lose them. I’d already got the car in with the repairers so I cancelled the claim before they undertook the work.

Luckily for me the repairers kept the car for an extra few days and repaired it. When they called me to say the car was done and ready to collect, I said I’d cancelled the claim and the work with my insurers so they shouldn’t have done anything. My insurers sent them proof of the cancellation (which was sent to the repair centre BEFORE they started the work) and in the end I got my car repaired for free and no loss of claims.

I feel your pain pal! This happened to my E90 back in 2012 when we had the freak hail storm fall on 26th July. I had 38 dents on the bonnet, wings, roof and boot lid. It was repaired by Sytner Leicester. I had protected NCB so that was fine. Just had to pay my excess. Total repair cost was just over £4900.

Insurance compang was Elephant at the time. It was put down as weather damage claim. It only came off my insurance last year.

Took 6 weeks to repair. Was given a lovely fiat 500 as a loan vehicle ha!

My sister had some serious damage done to her 57 plate 320d msport by big hailstones, car was only a couple of years old at the time, they had to replace the roof bonnet and boot at a total cost of 7k. She was without her car for weeks as well.

Cost of repair £4.5k! An expensive storm! A lot of cars in the surrounding area have been written off apparently - mine has come out relatively well compared to some the repairers had seen!

What are they looking to replace for £4500?

When my two week old car got hammered, Dent Devils managed to remove at least 40+ dents without removing the roof lining with adhesive pullers. Probably took out a few factory flaws while they were at it too!

Didn't need to bother with insurance, the £500+VAT bill wasn't much more than my excess.

That's a great price if they did a perfect job on it. Think I'd go down that route too if I was unfortunate enough to have a car damaged by giant hail

Over 400 dents just on the roof so not a small job, bonnet, boot lid, front wings and rear quarters all affected.

Yep, a perfect job and totally flawless. It happened the same weekend the car was due to be dropped off for its detailing and paint protection.

Chris at Petrolhead detailing in Peterborough was excellent and arranged a trade price repair with Dent Devils for me. He even lent the use of his detailing bay with the strong LED lights for free allowing the work to be completed more easily and away from the elements.

I will definitely be recommending and using his services again

Crikey, that’s a pretty serious amount then. About ten times worse than mine by the sounds of it

Luckily it only hit the flat top surfaces on the roof, bonnet and boot lid with me. No damage to the wings, top edges of doors, roof rails or trim. Having a sunroof helped protect a good third of the roof as well.

Yes!

Then when the damage was assessed they mark every dent for accuracy! Didn't believe them so I checked myself
