All this does is make your car take longer to warm up, it's never really been proven to help.

I can't imagine it taking longer than it already does, my '01 330i warms up quicker in the winter than my '14 335i does in the summer!?...

The problem is that the thermostat is essentially left open, meaning that the cooler is used sooner, which in turn keeps oil from getting to operating temp as fast.

I've been a Mobil1 guy for life. But since it's no longer LL-01 approved I had to branch out. I went with Motul 8100 5W-40 and my engine is noticeably quieter and smoother. So far so good!

It's also very affordable. I got it on Amazon in bulk, turned out to be about $6.5/qt.

2015 n55 335i

1) So we should stick to LL-01 and not use LL-04?

2) Which viscosity does the dealer use? 5w30? 0w40 acceptable?

3) Should the plastic drain plug be changed every time the oil is changed? Does buying the filter from the dealer include the drain plug as well?

Seems like the consensus is that the Pennzoil Platinum Euro (Shell company now, same gas to oil tech) is the better main stream brand oil to use, followed by Castrol Edge. Both are LL-01. This still holds true?

Same here. I buy the kits from FCP Euro when they're on sale. Changed my oil and filter a few days ago for less than $60. I also add MoS2 to each oil change after my initial Ceratec treatment.

Simply put, not one of us in here can prove that using a non ll01 will negatively affect the car. Get the correct weight, and dont do 10k intervals.

That said I religiously use Liquimoly molygen 5w40 in both my n55 f30 and m54 e46. I used to use mobil1 but i like the green oil.

I use Motul Xcess 5W40 100% synthetic. Remember fully synthetic does not mean 100% synthetic.

Looking to do an oil change soon. I"ve been running the Castrol Edge Euro formula 0W-40 and I"ve liked it but thinking about purchasing through FCP Euro due to a lifetime warranty. I can't pass up a good deal and never having to pay for an oil change again is a pretty damn good deal. Anyway, I'm stuck between the LiquidMoly 5W-40 and Liquid Moly Molygen 5W-40. Has anyone run the Molygen before?

That's because your E46 had a buffered coolant temp gauge and your 335i has an oil temp gauge. Oil temps always lag coolant temps.

I've heard of bmw oil being the potential cause of some issues. Friend of mine is a very very good bmw tech. He recommends liquidmoly. It's what I use in mine, when it's not broken (:

It helps prevent LSPI in direct injection engines.

LSPI has never been an issue with BMW.

The N55 can run LL01, 01FE, 04, 12FE

Yes it does but oil weight is irrelevant because it's covered by the Oil Cert.

In any case since 1998 or so BMW certs historically covered 0w30/40 - 5w30/40 and recently a 20w. The 10w60 not withstanding for a couple of naturally aspirated M models.

In Germany LL01 was replaced by LL04 and LL01FE by LL12FE. LL04/LL12FE are ACEA Cx oils due to use of ULSD/ULSG.

I believe 0w-30 is the lowest number that's compatible with our F30s though. 0w-20 is only for the newer engines.
