Corrosion

Hi

I bought F31 last year from Main BMW dealer, Alloys were refurbed before the car was delivered to me, I have just notice one of my passenger rear wheel is corroding.

If i contact BMW will they do anything about it?

None of the wheel is kerbed at all since I have had the car.

If the car is less than 3 years old then the dealer will have to refurb or replace. If you bought the car less than 12 months ago, even if the car is older than 3 years, then the same should apply under the terms of the AUC scheme.

If the car falls outside both of these criteria then you will have to try and persuade the dealer to do the right thing.

In that case, the cover under the Approved Used Car scheme should apply. The car is guaranteed for 12 months. They should refurbish again.

Check all of the other wheels very closely for even the first sign of corrosion, particularly around the centre caps. If they have refurbished one badly, the chances are there may be corrosion on the others.

For the sake of convenience, try the local dealer. With any luck, they will deal with Sytner Newport for you, do the refurb themselves, and bill Sytner. If have another branch of Sytner within reach, that may make life simpler..

If they’re diamond cut then refurbishing them again will just result in them corroding again. Best thing to do is get them powder coated instead.

Hi

Car is booked with my local Sytner. At the moment corrosion is only on wheel, I really want to get all of them Refurbed just in case they start to go bad once my warranty runs out..
What are the chance they will do all 4 wheels instead of just one?

Preemptive refurb is more likely to result in corrosion, once refurbed the integrity of the original paint/lacquer is likely to be prone to the usual.

You only get a finite number of refurbs on a diamond cut wheel. So, a preemptive refurb my actually hurt you long term.

I seem to recall it's 2 refurbs then replace or powder coat.

2 1/2 years ago, maybe outside possibility. These days with their OCD approach not a chance.

Corrosion isn't covered under AUC so you may find it's a wasted trip.

Yeah, this ^

Auc warranty only covers electrical or mechanical failures, not cosmetic issues.

If it was like it when you bought it, you'd have to find pictures to prove it, but even then suspect it'll be a bit of an uphill struggle.

As they were refurbed before you had the car, personally I'd try the goodwill route, but even new wheels seem to start going to shit after 2-3 years anyway, even with religious cleaning regimes, diamond cut is just a wank idea in the UK IMHO.

I bought my car approved used and I had X3 wheels replaced under warranty (442m) - now its different as my car had balance of OEM warranty so maybe that is why 3 wheels were replaced. The 4th wheel (rear passenger), I was told had been refurbished already so went back to the dealer I got the car from, they agreed to pay for full refurb through my local dealer - now interesting that the same wheel has been refurbed thrice as it degrades after every 2 to 3 months but I wont let it go that easy - in my opinion, the refurb should be to the spec - this is why we go these dealers therefore it should last longer not just few months!
