Strange humming noise from 100kmh till 130kmh

Hello all,

I am from the netherlands, so my english is not perfect. I have a problem with my F31. Until 100kmh its perfect, no noise. From 100kmh till 130kmh, i have some humming or pulsating noise. Noise sounds deep, you feel it in your ears but its absolut not a loud noise. My wife does not hear it but i am freaking about it. My garage has mounted a new differential but the noise is still the same. Now i am a few weeks further and i think the sound is coming from the front. I think wheel bearings. Is this possible or does anyone another idea?

Could be wheel bearings either front or rear. Front is very easy to change you can do it yourself, rear takes much longer around 4-5 hours.

I had similar situation, from 140 to 160 kmh! Any revs, any gear, same sound... mechanics said differential, or xdrive unit, or chain.....problem was in empty a/c system! After 20 dayswith that sound and expensive diagnosis "this or that", a/c stopped cooling. I got to refill a/c gas, go along my way and noise was gone! Try with that first! Cheapest fix!

Next week, the garage will mount 2 new wheelbearings in the front. I hope this will fix the problem.

Hope that fixes it, keep us updated. Some people have reported a humming sound at around 60 mph/100 kph that was resolved by a driveshaft replacement.

Mine had that when new. One front wheel bearing was bad.

This was my problem: https://youtube.com/shorts/joYI_RgRVpU?feature=share

No grinding noise or wheel play. My rear bearing turned out to be faulty, and the wheel itself was slightly bent.

Vibrating underbody panels can also cause this type of noise.

Hi agentorange,

Underbodyparts are fixed by the garage. There is a PUMA with this problem form BMW AG. They said, they solved it in my car. BMW dealers know about the body parts. Tommorow they will mount 2 new wheel bearings. I will keep you updated.

New tires reduced the noise just a bit. I was originally running two summers in the front and two all seasons in the rear, different brands don’t ask why that’s how previous owner set them up. Tire shop said i got two bent rims in the rear so getting them fixed tomorrow.

How often do you do balance and alignment and rotation for your car?
Check your tires if they look like this?

Sorry to hijack this thread. The same humming noise is driving me crazy and since misery loves company, I’m venting in this thread. Wheel repair shop found 3 bent rims so they’re fixing them.

So far, I’ve gotten new tires balanced, rims repaired. I’m out about $1000 right now and if this doesn’t fix it, then I’ll suspect wheel bearings.

So my wheel bearings are changed yesterday but the humming noise is still the same.
Does anyone know what this can be? I am still thinking about body parts or maybe the shock absorber?

Driveshaft is the likely culprit...

My wheels and tyres are new. Original wheels and Michelin tyres. I tried also another wheelset, and this gives the same noise. The noise is also not every day the same. Sometimes the sound is almos gone and sometimes the sound is really frustrating me.
Hope someone gives the right answer.

Hi im_an_alien,

Yes maybe possible but the sound/noise is not always the same. Sometimes its much louder than the other time. Can this still be the problem?

Did the repair shop say only two front wheel bearings were bad? What about the rear ones?

You mentioned it was your rear wheel bearings making that noise. Were you hearing the noise from the front?
