So I've done my research and I believe it's because I've used Iron-X on them which has caused them to rust?

I live in Melbourne, Australia, so there's no snow or heavy rain. Always garaged.



I'm guessing I can get the wheel balancing weights replaced, but how about the brake calipers? I don't want to paint them.

Calipers are made of cast iron, cast iron rusts. These are mine after three years, before and after I painted them:





The weights are probably lead, which doesn't rust, so you must have stained them with the Iron-X.

I don’t know the deal in Australia, but you haven’t been able to get lead balancing weights in the UK (probably all of Europe) for years.

They’re mostly plated steel, and always rust. That said, I don’t know what the genuine BMW weights are made from. My 2018 F31 has the factory weights, and they’re still as fresh as the day I collected it from the dealer.

Those listed as OEM replacement are zinc, which also doesn't rust.

It may be iron oxide particles from the brake dust on the wheel weights that just makes them appear to be rusting. Try cleaning with a Sonax wheel cleaner to remove the brake dust.

If you want to get rid of the rust on calipers and rotor hats paint them right on the car with G2 Caliper Paint, a two part epoxy-like heat resistant paint that you brush on right on the car and it levels out to look sprayed on. See G2USA. Stuff is amazing!

Unfortunately both those items aren't available in Australia!

Update: Just went and sprayed a bit of Poorboys Spray & Rinse on the balancers, and justed a toothbrush to aggravate it. The rust came off! Now to tackle the calipers.

I recall seeing something on the G2USA website that said they can ship internationally as long as they remove the can of brake cleaner from their kit, which is available anywhere.

For the callipers, simply remove the wheel, remove the white/silver Pad retaining clip with a screwdriver levered against your rotor hat, put a wire wheel on a drill and just clean them up. Whilst you're there you can also do your rotor hats, they'll come up like new. If you don't want to paint them then it's a 10 min job per corner.

I painted my callipers and rotor hats with E-Tech brush on caliper paint. It's a single part system so no mixing and looks sprayed on.[IMG][/IMG]

That was with just the hats painted, I did the callipers the following week when I changed out my pads

I believe you are correct.

Use P21S wheel cleaner gel. Best stuff on the market and is far better for wheels than any of those iron removers
