Car Shake/Judder

When at a standstill and idle, not jumping revs or anything, my cars shakes like the revs drop.

It used to it little and often to more frequent.

Any ideas?

Mine has done the same about one every few months. What mods do you have on the car or is it stock? Did you scan the car to see if there are any pending codes present?

I am having the same symptoms and I don't like it - shuddering at idle without the rpm dropping. Changed plugs, coils (regular maintenance tbh, 90k km on track) and it did not change a thing.

Probably it is normal and a result of the low output combustion mode of DI engines and is something we have to accept.

Any check engine lights? How old is the car? and how much mileage?

When is the last time you checked on your valves? DI engines gum up the intake valves and this results in poor running car and shaky idle. Valves should be cleaned every 100K or so.

Engine mounts would make the car shudder not only at idle.

Try cleaning MAF sensor maybe?

No lights on. 2013 plate with 75k. Full service history etc.

Was thinking flywheel or engine mounts? Sometimes the shake is violent, similar to when a car drops revs then the revs come back.

Forgot to mention that the car runs perfectly fine and smooth while driving (it is tuned stage 2). Only idling is an issue.

It could be a couple of things. At a standstill though, you likely wouldn't feel a problem with flywheel and engine mounts would only be affected under load but would not cause a shuddering or engine idle drop.

It's possible your plugs are starting to foul out. But usually you would also feel something like a power loss upon acceleration as well and you would likely feel it most/all the time.

It could also be your fuel pump starting to fail. I had a 2011 328i xdrive and the fuel pump went right around the same mileage. It could be working most of the time but every once in a while it may not pump at the proper pressure causing a lack of fuel, hence the shudder. Tough to say without really experiencing the problem or without any check engine lights

That's what I was thinking. It sucks that the pump is so pricey but the upside is that the filter is integrated into it. When I had my E46 it started to go at 90k.

Hi Guys,

I have given my MAF a bath today and the car seems to idle without shuddering even though it still vibrates a bit. Maybe it is due to AC compressor, cabin resonating or whatever.

My dad's X3 with the same engine n20 idles so smooth and without any vibrations that I start to envy that comfort even though I don't like SUVs.

Do you guys also feel some vibrations on idle with AC turned on?

Best regards

On my N20 6 speed, yes it does vibrate a little bit but not to the point where I would need to change the engine mounts.
