walmart oil - which one

ok, I know it has been asked what oil to use like a 1000 times.

But what I want to know is what Oil can I buy from Walmart that is LL01 or LL04?
and most important - CHEAP.
That is what I am looking for.

Thanks in advance.

You're not going to find cheap oil with an LL01 or LL04 rating, because it has to be synthetic and they have to pay BMW a royalty to put LL01 or LL04 on the label. Good old Mobil 1 5w-30 is fine, and is as low a priced oil as you want to use.

You do NOT want LL-04 unless you are located in Europe. It has to do with fuel additives used there. LL-01 is meant for North America.

Castrol European Formula in a black 5-Quart jug is LL-01 certified. Walmart near me sells it in 0W-40 for <$25. I've had some good luck with Walmart in that if they don't have something I can order it on their website. It ships to my local store for free and I pick it up there.

UPDATE (Jan2020): Castrol stopped paying BMW for the right to list LL-01 Certification on the label but I've read that the Castrol European Formula oil is still the same.

Mobil 1 0w-40 European. They don’t pay BMW for the endorsement, so you won’t see "LL01" on the label, but it is an ACEA A3/B3, A3/B4 spec oil, which is the specification under which LL01 falls.

^^+1 on this^^
ACEA A3/B3, A3/B4 is what I focus on....I've been using Castrol 0W40 Euro blend in my E46 330ci, F30 335i, and my F80 M3 before and after the BMW LL01 certification label disappeared on it's label as well with no issues backed up from multiple Blackstone reports from all 3 BMW's.

I'm changing my oil at 5,000 mile intervals and with $22.00 for a 5 gallon jug from my local Walmart it works for me.

This is Great info, and I am leaning towards this also.
still keeping an eye out for a LL01 certified one though.

Thank you, great info.

ok, Question Guys:

So far my choices are:
Castrol EDGE 0W-40 A3/B4 Full Synthetic Motor Oil
https://www.walmart.com/ip/Castrol-E...-5-QT/35931146

or

Mobil 1 Advanced Full Synthetic Motor Oil 0W-40, 5 qt.
https://www.walmart.com/ip/Mobil-1-A...-5-qt/23636902

The Only difference I see is Castrol for the current Moment is $2.50 Cheaper.

I was really hoping someone would say Castrol 0-30 cause that is the oil that I can say, ran the coolest in my e90 335i.
Mobile and Castrol 0-40 were both good, but also ran hotter than 0-30 anyday.

I could see a difference between both.
My E90 did not have an oil cooler compared to my F30 335i now, but have not tried anything other than Castrol 0-40 LL01 yet. (I had stock)

Here is the “official” list of LL-01 approved oils. There may be oils on the list that no longer have BMW’s official endorsement, but as long as they fall under the ACEA A3/B3 or A3/B4 spec, you will be fine. Scroll down until you see the heading “named approved oils.”

Rotella T6 isn't a bad option, it's technically a diesel oil but the oil is meant for boosted engines. Have used it before on my ej205 wrx and n54 335i. Currently using it in my n26 228i.

I'm on my 2nd service with T6 and I just recently had to add 1/2 of a quart because it was low at around 7000 miles of my 8000 mile interval. I did use Castrol 0W-40 syntech for almost 100k miles on my previous N20 228i and never had this issue. I'm switching back to that for the wagon. I'm at just under 64k miles. I got it CPO at 47k.

Sure. LL01 is a dead spec so M1 was unable to obtain a new approval when they changed the formula.

Currently using Castrol EDGE 0w40 A3/A4

Best oil I've found for my N20 at Walmart.

Also have used Mobil 1 0w40 from there in the past, with positive results.

Is it really? Has it been superceded by something else, like LL01 FE?

It's not dead, just old. The 01 stands for 2001. Your response in post #10 was spot on.
