Car accelerating by itself...

Hiya,

Been a while since I've posted here, but all has been good and I've been a happy chappie.

Don't want to go into too much detail yet, but has anyone heard of any recent model BMW's trying to accelerate by themselves when stationary (stopped at lights, traffic, turning etc) but in gear? Foot off throttle 100%, but engine revving to 3500-4000 rpm.

Simon...

Would be interested in what you find out from the dealership, if it is a similar issue to the thread link above , it could be a potential issue for many of us?

Thanks minijet.

Here's video of the incident, 2nd time occurred, but first time not on dashcam.

Don't want to go into more details just yet as to outcome resolution (no fault found, in summary), but should be able to shortly.

Yup, one comment I was relayed from (allegedly) BMW was "We've never seen this before" and "The system is designed to not have this kind of thing happen". Paraphrasing for the 2nd item, but concerning never the less, yes.

Wondering if I need to look at reporting to a regulatory body of some sort, such as Department of Transport, but dreading the runaround I'd invariably get.

Bloody hell that would have been a shock!!! Glad you were able to react quickly, it could have caused a serious incident if it accelerated off . Hope you get some proper resolution from BMW!

Okay, this occurred on the 3rd of October and the northern WA metro dealer has had the vehicle since the 4th of October. The first instance was in August but wasn't quite as severe because I was slowing to make a right turn at uncontrolled intersection when it occurred. It just came good by itself after a few seconds of surging under brakes. It totally threw me, so I couldn't give too much info to the dealer at the time. No errors logged, no fault found.

Thank goodness for the dashcam vision this time, because they've been unable to reproduce except for an instance of it holding revs high once on the hoist when downshifting.

Their lead service guy has been driving the vehicle to and from work for the last week or so, with no issues again.

They've updated all of the software and BMW AU and Germany have been dialled into the vehicle remotely to investigate, with no resolution.

The warranty expires in Dec this year and I expressed my concerns at this and that I would be out on a limb if it reoccurred after that, even with this history.

Today BMW Australia offered me a 1 year warranty extension as a 'goodwill gesture' and assurances that they were committed to finding a resolution if it reoccurred.

So, I have accepted their offer and will collect the vehicle today and return the loaner. I have reiterated that I am not convinced that the issues been resolved by the software update and that the root cause has not been identified and have advised them that I won't be so accommodating if it happens for a third time. I've also asked for a checklist of things to do / observe / note in the event that it does reoccur.

Here's hoping that it IS, indeed, resolved.

PS: A forewarning on both occasions was that the revs hold up higher than normal on the auto downshifts for a half dozen or so times slowing down at lights or intersections before the incident occurs.

PPS: Both have been RH turns too, for what that's worth at this stage

Okay, I've got my beast back. Certainly missed driving it, especially compared to a 2.0 X3 loaner for the last 2 weeks, but mustn't complain about that.

An interesting thing the service guy told me was that BMW could 'see' the incident somewheee in logs or software and 'saw' that both the throttle and the brake were active at the time of the incident. Now, that's interesting, as I said. Everyone accepts that my foot was nowhere near the throttle pedal though :-)

I read somewhere that a forum member here had a similar thing happen to his 1M. The root of the cause was something to do with a short fuse or circuit problem in the accelerator pedal sensor, this triggers the accelerator to randomly work, even if your foot is off it.

Thanks, Minijet posted a link above that referred to a 1 series that he had a problem with. We'll see what the next 3 months or so brings.

Final update for now - BMW advise that they don't need to provide a checklist, just a verbal description of events if the occur again. Okaaaay, not how I'd do it, but we'll see.

This would be my checklist if that type of problem recurred:

1. Apply brakes and quickly shift into Neutral to disengage engine.
2. Turn engine off and turn Hazard warning lights on.
3. Apply handbrake and turn radio off to remove background noise.
4. Before you turn engine on, use a mobile to film the position of your foot and the tacho reading in case it revs out again.

Stay safe and I hope the problem gets resolved soon.

Yup, good list. I'm kicking myself I didn't turn radio off that time

I'll be videoing it next time, I assure you.

Cheers,

Simon...

Hi Simon,

I realise this is an old post. The video doesn't look like it's still available. I can't use the PM system yet (as I'm new and not allowed), so just posting here first. Do you still have this video? Something similar happened to me and it resulted in an incident. I did have a witness in the car but no dashcam and am interested to see if it could be related.

Regards
-Ralph
