6MT clutch and flywheel Upgrade?

Hey guys it's you're boy Chicken_Joe, you already know what it is........

Seriously though, I was at a stop light and took off a bit vigorously, not flooring it in 1st as I blow the tires off. Changed to second and floored it, hit 3rd and floored it again and then all of a sudden my rpms shot up and the car didn't go any faster. No tire spin that I could feel so that let me to believe that my clutch was slipping.

Questions:

1. Is there some sort of sensor on the 6MT that acts in the same way the 8AT does that limits the torque or prevents it from hurting itself if it senses too much power?

2. I'm fairly sure my clutch slipped? What are your thots????

3. Assuming I need to get a new clutch it would be wise to upgrade. I was looking at the following
---> Spec stage 2+ rated for 545 lb ft.

4. Should I upgrade my flywheel along with it? Options I have are;
---> Spec Aluminum (14lb) Flywheel or the Spec Steel (22lb) flywheel.

Has anyone had issues like this before? If you have what did you do to correct the issue? (No I'm not going to pussy foot my car, I drive it hard.)

What other options are there for clutch and FW upgrades. I would like to maintain stock-ish drivability but gain some performance in the tranny department. I don't launch control my car anymore due to having had the transmission replaced due to a bad 2nd gear synchronizer.

Also, while my car is in the air I was thinking of buying a new slave cylinder and trying to do the CDV mod on a new OEM part and then install it later. Has anyone done this to theirs? I know the CDV is located inside the slave cylinder on the F30 so I understand the task at hand. Would deleting the CDV make my car more prone to tranny issues later on even with the upgraded parts?

Thnx 4 Halp frenz

That sucks, but hey, you get to upgrade with piece of mind. Not that I have direct knowledge, but some have said in other threads that the 550 clutch is pretty robust. I'm not sure how that compares to the Spec though in strength or cost.

I've also wondered about the advantages/disadvantages of going to an aluminum flywheel vs steel.

Either way, good luck and I look forward to reading about the results.

From what I read the aluminum spins up quicker but also decelerates quicker and it will lead to me having to wind the car up from a stop to take off

What mods do you have that your clutch is going? I also have a 6mt so I'm a bit concerned.

JB4, DP, FMIC, CP, drop in Filter exhaust and I usually run E85 around e40 every other or every 2 weeks

Have you looked into the 550i clutch? Seems to be a popular upgrade, not sure if it holds up well.

I'm not sure if it would fit in my car

I have 6mt 435i. This is my first manual car. Although, I've been driving a manual for 2 years prior on my moms car.
There's been two instance when I'm shifting at WOT (from 2nd to 3rd) and the car doesn't speed up, but the rmps still climb if I continue to press the gas pedal. Once I ease off the gas and reapply pressure on the gas pedal, the car acts normals and picks up speed. Really weird; have never experienced anything like this before.

I was wondering if there was some sort of safety for the tranny like how the 8AT is where is auto slips to save the torque but when I asked the SA he said that the manual cars don't have one of those safeties. I guess the safety is the clutch itself slipping lol

So is our shifting technique - or lack thereof - not right and thus causing our clutch to slip?

I'm barely at 29,000 miles and my clutch is slipping?!
It happened once before I even added any mods, I just thought I shifted improperly ...

That is because our stupid CDV is slipping the clutch for us. We cannot aggressively shift fast at all.
Real clutch slip is like what others have said, if you lay into it when in 4th or 5th, and it starts slipping. Thats when you need to upgrade the clutch itself.

So Ive been researching the CDV quite a bit, looks like all E9x slaves bolt up, this is becuase the updated P/N for E-series is our F3x slave. So they definately bolt right in. Problem is we will need to source the older metal slave cylinders which has an external CDV, and need to source the older slave line. You can still find the metal E9x slaves online new, but I cannot seem to find the clutch line for it (new).....

ChickenJoe:
Can you provide any info on this CDV mod for our F-series built-in CDV?

The only option I see currently is to have a hydraulic shop make me a new line from master cylinder to slave.

Also anyone know if the E46 slave is the same as the E90? I hope so because then we can get those new and for cheap.

Also#2.....the E82 (1-series) slave seems to be different than the E90's....they do not have a superseding P/N for the F-series slaves.

The 550/335is clutch fits on the N55. Mine is running like a champ with 500wtq. The CDV is built in for you guys. Mine is not so maybe a mod to an earlier clutch slave cylinder is possible for you guys.

To note on this topic I have a 328i 6 speed. I too have felt the clutch "slip" when hard shifting from 1st to 2nd and 2nd to 3rd. Have thought I burnt my clutch up but no smell. I even did the 4th and 5th gear up hill test and the clutch did not slip one bit. So same as others have mentioned I think we have the CDV problem. I have been looking into this and I can confirm the older E90 slave will fit an work just the line will need to be made but I think I will just have a metal braided line made as it seems cheaper.

I was going to ask if that is the case. Are the oem ones hard lines or soft lines. I can have some lines made probably at work. I would like to just buy an oem slave and then crack it open and find the little part that is causing all of this fucking trouble. I work in a CNC/Fab/engineering shop so I have plenty of resources

I do. It have any info as of right now. I know of only one guy on here that has done the CDV mod.... I think. I would love to talk to him on the phone and gain some back story and info on this. If the problem is literally a small part I'm sure I can make one and fit it and if it works well enough then have my company mass produce like 100 of them. I'll make sure to either debur them myself or have a really good guy at the shop do it lol

The CDV is 100% the culprit. Its sole purpose is to force slipping to occur for smooth engagement regardless of driver style. That was BMW's advancement to manual driving. I'm surprised that E90, or any F series owners have not made this break through and even more so that BMS or others haven't brought this to the market.

Even if you modded it with a stock clutch you win.

I did the aluminum flywheel on my E36 and E46. From my personal experience I'm not sure I'd do it again with a daily driver. Due to the weight reduction it doesn't always maintain rpm at an idle. Less weight to keep the engine spinning so at times it dips in rpm then has to catch up which causes the rpms to bounce up n down a bit. Then there's the extra attention needed when taking off. No more easy take offs with little effort. IMHO they're probably best suited for track cars.

So you are saying that my clutch is actually fine but the CDV causes it to slip? Is that a safety feature or a byproduct of the CDV? I am curious as to if my clutch is actually bad now as last night I was beating on the car again with just 93 and map 5. Outside temps were much lower then when the car first slipped. Probably by about 20 degrees F. Nothing out of the ordinary happened. I even tried going up hill in the car in 4-5 hears and flooring it trying to make it slip and nothing happened.
