Bootmod3 and JB+

Hey guys,
I have BM3 stage 1 on my N20 320i. I don't have any hardware upgrades. I wanted to know if I could stack JB+ (not JB4) to it and not have to change out parts.

Thank you!

And the purpose would be.. to get higher boost pressure? Why not just go to BM3 stage 2 instead?

Hahahahah,

I think a VW guy tried to stack full tunes recently, and expected 2x the power. He doesn't post anymore. One local has seen his car at the dealer requesting warranty work because of a blown engine.

I thought JB+ would add more horsepower. Isn't that why people stack JB4? I just thought to do JB+ because it's less horsepower and maybe I wouldn't have to do any bolt ons

Why would you want to add JB+, JB4 or any chip tune on top of a BM3 tune? BM3 is tuning your car within safety limits. When you add external chip tunes, you may exceed these limits for a few extra whp but at the cost of damaging your engine. I would not recommend doing this.

I would go for a stand alone meth controller like snow performance stage 2.5 kit if you want to run meth and not mix the two. However people do this with JB4 but I do not see the point unless you running meth. A flashed car can be modified for exactly what you need, if you want more go for custom tune and modify for exactly that.

Don't do it! Understand what each of those two tunes is doing. The BootMod3 Stage1 is a flash tune that is working within all of the engine management and safeguard systems to give you more performance while not blowing up your engine.

The JB+ on the other hand is a very simple plug-in at the charge pipe air sensor that tricks the engine into increasing boost pressure to more than it thinks it has. For an N55 engine that's about 4psi more. I don't know the exact JB+ boost number for your engine, but the concept is the same. The JB+ is meant to be installed on a stock engine. That small amount of JB+ added boost is within the stock engine's parameters to handle safely.

When you read about a JB4 being stacked on top of a BootMod3 flash tune it's for the JB4's fuel management capabilities for meth.

A BootMod3 tune is already comfortably maximized within your engine's safety limits. Tricking an already BM3 tuned engine to add more boost by adding a JB+ on top can easily put it into unsafe territory and potentially blow your engine. Attempting to get cheap power for $200 can easily get you a $5,000+ engine repair bill.

Much more cost effective, and less risky, is to invest in the required BootMod3 engine mods (I assume upgraded intercooler, high flow catted/catless downpipe & colder NGK plugs?) and spend the $50 for the BM3 tune package.

The BootMod3 Stage1 tune is maximized within the limits of the stock engine hardware. To run higher levels of boost with BootMod3 Stage2 you need to upgrade the hardware to remove those limitations. The stock intercooler can't cool the higher volume of boosted air fast enough in a tuned car. When the engine's safety systems sense that the intake air temperature is too high they activate and cut the engine power. It's called heat soak. In practical terms your engine will feel sluggish on an already warm day. Or say even on a cool day, you punch it when a light turns green and get nice power. You try it again at the next green light or when you try to pass someone and you get sluggish.

BootMod3 Stage1 can't safely tell the turbo supply more boost because of the back pressure of the stock catted downpipe. Upgrading to a "high flow" downpipe has much less back pressure. That's why BootMod3 Stage2 can supply more boost to the engine without harming the turbo itself with too high levels of back pressure.

The high flow downpipe can be catted or catless with minuscule performance difference. My catted downpipe has been dyno tested to be 93% of the flow of a completely empty catless DP. And I get no gasoline smell, no check-engine lights and I pass emissions without paying $ & my time time to swap out DP's every year.

Hope this helps!

If you want more power, either add more mods or get a custom tune

JB+ will add up to 4psi of boost, which is probably about the difference between BM3 Stage 1 and Stage 2. As others have commented, this is not a good approach. Go Stage 2 or a custom tune.

Great way to lean out your motor and blow it up, if nothing else.

So you're saying there's a chance it could work? :

The JB+ has a dial so you could use it to add say 1psi or 2psi, but you'd want to log your car, to ensure it's safe for the octane being used.

I don't think JB+ work like that. I think it preprogrammed target boost psi like 21 psi and trick the ecu to reach that boost. But because he has BM3 flash which some say target boost for 20.5 psi. With this data..I will assume that the JB+ will want to trick the bm3 flash that is already at 20.5 psi to target 21 psi. So my conclusion is that they not going to stack up and it is going to be a waste of money.

Please make sure you follow up! Most of the people that start a piggy back setup usually drop off the forums quickly.

You either get bit by the modding bug or not.

Some just want the extra power the simplest way. Piggyback then there done

Personally I could hardly wait to get my jb+ out of my car - and switch to BM3. At stage 2 I wouldn't want to push it more.

I was implying that something explodes, then they never come back. Then we hear from one of their friends that it was a major exploding that cost in the 5 digit range.

I honestly hope it all works out for you, but this is nothing I would even consider.
