Door Ding On Loaner, Question

While getting my F30 worked on, the X2 loaner I was in was dinged. Dealer is telling me the damage is going to cost $1100 to fix. I'm not looking to shirk responsibility but I find their claim to be absolutely fraudulent and predatory. In conversation with the lot guy I was expecting at most a bill for a dent removal specialists. I'm attaching a picture of the ding and their estimate. I'd appreciate the opinion of our community and what if any options I have. It's just not sitting right with me.

The loaner should be insured by the dealer. You're probably covered by your own insurance as well, speak with your insurance carrier.

It is I'm sure, but I have a $500 deductible and would hate to have a claim for something so insignificant. Pictures tell a 1000 words. It's not letting me upload estimate or pics. Sorry

Thanks for the reply

Seems high, but if it is on the body line those are hard to fix. Sheesh. I might not get rentals anymore.

Had a car back into my passenger side door in the 435 & push it in pretty good. Fix was replace the entire door outer skin & paint match sapphire black. $1200 at the dealers own body shop.

Repaired car

In my experiences, the Dealer's loaners are covered by their policies and when you sign the loaner agreement, there is a block that you accept/decline their coverage or it may be mandatory . It should have indicated what, if any, the deductible is. Did you get a copy of the loaner agreement?

Does sound pretty high, a paint less dent repair guy would've been the best route to go to avoid the headache with the dealer. We had something similar happen to us 3 months ago, wife had a 2018 Lexus NX 300 loaner and while we were out shopping we happend to come back to the car at the same time the lady next to us did (it was very windy out) and as soon as she opened her door it flew into the passenger front door of the NX (right on the body line) and left a small paint chip on the beautiful pearl white paint along with a really small dent but, I happened to have some touch up paint at home and fixed it myself. When we took it back to the dealer they didn't even notice that small ding that was left behind. I still feel guilty about not telling the dealer because the car only had 8 miles on it when we got it, we took it back with almost 400 miles (we had it for almost 2 weeks).

Thanks everyone. I'll have to get a copy of what I signed, if I did. I don't remember doing so.

*this is the dealers body shop too

This is why you should always carry a $0 comprehensive deductible.

You experience is unique as almost all Dealers in Florida require you to present your current Insurance Card which they make a copy of and, in the agreement you sign, that your Insurance is the primary.

Well, that’s $250 a year HIGHER than $1000 Deductible in my case.

Considering I’d pay out of my pocket for anything under ~$2000 instead of filing a claim that would increase rates, seems like a waste to me.

Technically, using a credit card with Rental Auto Insurance that you charged the repair to, as the credit card coverage is for anything your Insurance DOES NOT COVER, they would cover the $1000 Deductible in my case.

Better check your receipt.

The part alone with no labor, prep, paint or anything else is $1,047.

I had two incidents in the past 12 months:

Hit a brick in a bmw loaner on the highway, and then hit a deer before that in my own car.

It's the comprehensive deductible, not the collision. It's less than $100 a year more.

I was quoting Comprehensive over a year.

No points.

No claims.

And you have 2 in a year. You’ll be paying much more soon anyway.

These quotes are for 6 months.

Regardless, as noted, credit card would pay the deductible on rental car.

Was not on me. Other party's insurance paid for it. I was told when they did the estimate it was $1200. I was just interested in how well the job was done.

BTW have no idea what the dealer paid for the parts. Had builders accounts with a number of dealers when I was doing cars & there were at least 3 prices over the counter for any part. From retail walk-in on down & the dealer made a profit on all of them.

This was typical a dealer would purchase a part from GM for $135.01. It would then be sold a their customer a collision center or body shop—for $228.83 & the body shop would mark it up for its customer.

A retail DIY walk-in would pay more then the body shop which had an volume account with the dealership.

Large mega dealer operations with their own big body shops have contracts with the various insurance companies with agree repair costs. My BMW dealer, part of the Hendrick operation, has office space for various insurance companies on site at the body shop.

BTW the DIY retail on a 440 door skin is $803.32. So any walk-up or mail order can get a skin for $243.68 less then your number without breaking a sweat. Also:

Quote:
Dealers do not give discount on parts to Insurance Companies. Period.
Choosing the insurance company's preferred repair shop has benefits for the insurance company, which has negotiated lower labor and material rates, as well as parts discounts with those shops.

Furthermore, as if BSM is hard enough to get correct, it's a nightmare to get a large side panel such as a door to match the attached front and rear side panels. Most would want to blend those to match and that's another $500, so for none of the painting you are already over $1500. Figure a minimum of $500 (most likely more to paint door) along with labor and prep, you are already at 2x what you stated. And most likely more than that.

I’m surprised those were covered under comprehensive - hitting the deer in particular sounds like collision. Rule of thumb I was told is that if you were in the car and it was moving, then it’s collision.
