Petition signed, but unfortunately the decision makers at BMW NA have probably made their minds up by now. Production has started, so it's likely too late for them to turn back.

The take rate for the manual tranny is so low that it makes little economic sense for BMW to do it. Petitions do nothing for the take rate, so a petition is useless IMO.
And 13 of my 20 BMWs were manual, but I drive the 8-spd ZF auto now, and would not go back to a manual. Maybe if I bought an older BMW, I would look for a manual. Enthusiasts are not driving the BMW market, regardless of what we think on this forum.

While I do appreciate the enthusiasm towards the manual transmission, if the petition results don't match the sales figures, nothing is going to change.
No one is buying cars with manual transmissions, time to let it go. |

When I looked for cars, dealers had no MT inventory. If there were demand, there would be cars on the lot. I ordered and got one, but I fear that the next time I need a car, there will be nothing available. When I tried to sell my previous car, I had to sell it cheap because nobody wanted to try to look for a buyer

205 petition signers isn't going to get BMW to do anything. 25,000 pre-paid orders for MT 3 series might.

Just bought a 340zhp... only 100 made with this package. They are all manual. The dealer grabbed my 335 6MT trade in... told me he has people in line waiting for a 6MT used 335!
Makes zero sense to me that G20 will be all auto when rest of world will get 6MT. So what if the take rate is low... they make them anyway, costs nothing to make it a special order item at the very least. I have never bought a new car in my life... pretty certain I won’t again, but the 340 had the best manual tranny I have ever driven! |

It costs a lot, especially as they have to produce the transmission and everything that goes with it to make a MT version. That cost is not an issue if they sell enough of them, but obviously they don't. The MT is the automotive equivalent of the black and white CRT TV, and those aren't coming back either.

Wasted effort. Stick a fork in it, the 6MT is done.

We are seeing the end of a lot of 'optioned' models across the manufacturers in Europe, due to tighter type approval with the new WLTP emissions testing regime. Very costly and time consuming. Plus the manufacturer's CO2 targets. If MT is not as efficient, of course models will be dropped to sell the more CO2 efficient AT. |

Enthusiasts generally like the idea of manual over auto ..... I mean just look at our forums here, I would consider this an "enthusiast" forum and its pretty clear that most of us here love manuals (and wagons too!). But how many on this board has manuals compared to auto? The take rate for manuals on this forum isn't even that high, so really the real world take rate is minimal.
At the end of the day, enthusiasts don't bring in the majority of profits, so when BMW (or any manufacture) crunches the numbers, they would rather sell to "casuals" than enthusiasts as the casuals are the ones that make up the majority of the market. I wish it wasn't this way .... but that's the reality of global markets. |

I signed but I’m not hopeful. First, the G20 has what, 380 HP / 370 lb-ft of torque...the F30 MPPSK limited the torque on the manual tranny, so that manual won’t work. They’d more than likely have to put the M manual in, for additional cost. If they cared, and they don’t.
BMW is more in the leasing business, and most if not all of their customers are not the customers of the past. I only bought my 2016 340ix BECAUSE it had a manual available. Looks like I will have to sit in this car for a while, no big deal, I was in my 99 Passat for 16 years. But nowhere to go after that, unless I get a “real” sports car....M3/4, Boxster, Corvette, Mustang GT....but no more regular 4 door sedans with manuals, six cylinder engines, AWD. Sigh. Might as well go electric, what fun. |

Word on the street is that all standard new model BMWs (G) will NOT have a manual option anymore..
BMW plans to only offer a manual option for some M models exclusively. Sort of like what they did with the LSD option from the early '90s. Even the AWD will G80 will be auto ZF8 only. The RWD G80/82 will have a manual option. So if you do the math, manual option for future M2 & M4 only. Then after that comes the electric version.. Judgement Day is coming for BMW manuals.. So make like Frozen and just "Let It Go" |
