How do I get into auto cross?
Hi everyone,
My girlfriend and I did a BMW driving event a few months back and the experience has resonated with me. I live in San Jose, CA and I've been thinking about getting into autocross as a part time thing except I am not sure where I should start? Does anyone have any advice and how to start joining events? |

They also do a couple car control schools there beforehand that you might want to sign up for if all you've done prior is a BMW NA driving event (like the UDE at the Cow Palace last year). I did their car control school last year and found it very educational. There were all sorts of makes and models of "everyday cars" there (such as a Subaru Outback, Honda Civic, and Hyundai Elantra) and very inexperienced drivers (performance driving-wise), so it's an easy way to really learn some of your vehicles responses and limits in a non-intimidating environment. It's also nice that the speeds are kept low enough that no helmets are required. |

Good advice from Farjke...going to the car control school is a good idea. Most AutoX clubs offer this type of program and it is perfect. Getting some tips and practice is huge. Just little things like trying a slalom thru cones or doing a steady turn around a circle of cones to learn how close you are to the cones make a big difference.

I did SCCA with my STI great people fun events and comraderee. Very Welcoming of new members and you can go out as a non member untill you decide to join. You are placed in a category based on stock car.... if you go aftermarket in certain ways its going to put you in different categories depending on wether its wheels and tires or a full engine swap. Check out the classes from stock/ superstock, stock modified or modified etc etc Last edited by Rob340i; 01-28-2018 at 12:51 AM.. |

I drove NASA HPDE1 in my 100% stock 328i at Sonoma Raceway. In group 1 you get an instructor, passing is only permitted at the 3 straights, and they are super strict about no passing at all under yellow flags (one year ban), so you feel safe no one is going to crash into you. Best $200 I've ever spent. |
