HOLY Brake Dust Batman!!

I know I know, BMW's are known for producing lots of brake dust but I just got my 435i on Monday and it's INSANE how bad the rims look. I have the upgraded M Sports brakes and expected some dust but will 200 mile on it I need to know what you guys are using to fight this other than elbow grease?!

Chemical Guys Diablo wheel gel to clean, and Chemical Guys Wheel Guard sealant to protect and reduce brake dust buildup
http://www.chemicalguys.com/default.asp

My wheels stay pretty much totally clean looking between washes

Get the Diablo cleaner and the sealant as ZENABIMMER recommended. Also get a EZ detail brush like this:

http://www.detailedimage.com/DI-Brus.../Mini-Size-S2/

The Diablo wheel cleaner I dilute 4 parts water - 1 part diablo gel. It still works great and lasts a long time. Spray it on, give a brush and rinse.

I tried Sonax wheel cleaner. Looks cool as it changes colour. It does get off a fair bit of the brake dust on its own. However, I found it needed a few applications or a brushing to get the wheels clean. That stuff is $$$. Just stick to Diablo cleaner and the brush.

Brush looks good. I'm on CG's now debating on getting one of those foam guns. They look awesome.

Have you actually tried cleaning them yet? They look bad, but it wipes off pretty easily with just a wet soapy sponge. That's assuming you can get into all the nooks and crannies.

Yeah I was out today and cleaned them. Didn't want the dust to cake too bad in the heat. I have the 19s and there's a really tight spot on one spoke. But I ordered a few things from CGuys today. Thanks for the links

No problem! Chemical Guys products are fantastic, and it becomes an addiction! ;-)

The foam gun is very cool, but I'd only get one if you have a pressure washer to hook it up to. If you do get one, make sure you let the foam dwell for a few minutes, then power wash it off before cleaning with the normal two bucket method, that way the foam is allowed to pull most if the dirt and debris off the paint, thus minimizing the chances of scratches using the wash mit. Some people make the mistake of using the wash mit with the foam caked on the car, and that's just likely to scratch the debris that the foams lifted right back into the clear coat.

Chemical Guys have hundreds of fantastic demonstration videos on their YouTube channel that you should also check out

take a look at

Sonax Full Effect Wheel Cleaner and Sonax Wheel Cleaner Plus
Wheel Woolies
EZ-Detail Brush
Auto Finesse Hog Hair's Brushes

Video

it would not be a bad idea to protect the rims with a wax or even better a coating.

some suggestions
Auto Finesse Mint Rims
Sonax Polymer Net Shield
Opti Coat

M Sport and M Performance brakes are identical on the 335i and 435i, except for the dimpled/slotted rotors.

That picture looks like some serious road rage occurred...or someone drove through a vineyard.

THose who have used power washers...are these the standard ones that you use to wash your deck or siding with? If adjusted up to mid pressure, it'll rip right through skin (yes I know that for a fact ) How do you make sure you don't screw up and blast the paint right off??

Try This Out...

As a proud owner of five previous Bimmer's (435 vert is due in any day now from a fun ED at the Welt) I understand the desire for our rims to always look good. Here's my secret weapon - I use a dry car wash mitt (not expensive) every other night on the rims. My hands never get dirty, the rims look great and when the mitt's dirty I just throw it in the machine. Hope this helps someone.

would this doesn't potentially scratch the rims over time? with the amounts I'm seeing I'd have to wash the mitt every other day! lol

Scratches?

Good question. I wash the mitt every other week and I've never had an issue with my rims being scratched.

Brake dust is very abrasive, I'd be worried about scratching the wheels. At least make sure to spray a quick detailer first for some lubricity

I use sonax right now but am looking for something a bit cheaper. It does come off very easily if you stay on top of it ie I clean my wheels once a week. Using the pressure washer at the self-serve car wash. I just spray the Sonax on, let it do its work then use the high pressure rinse and the wheels are sparkling. No brushing at all.

I've been using the Chemical Guys Wheel Guard and it works pretty well. I just wash the car as normal, then to finish up apply the paste, then remove. It takes the grime & dust off as well as shines in one step.

So far, I've had less dust accumulate on the wheels, and for the most part - they have retained a nice polished sheen. We'll see how long it lasts.

the CG Wheel Guard should last 3 months, just make sure to not use a strong wheel cleaner in the interim that would remove it, such as the Sonax. CG's Diablo cleaner works great and won't remove the sealant
