EGR 'quality enhancement'

Had BMW perform an interim oil change on my 320D this morning & was advised that my car was due an EGR 'quality enhancement' whatever that is....

Apparently they run a software check to ensure its operating within certain parameters & if not, they'll replace the EGR.

To be honest, I don't trust a word they say & I refused the work. Got visions of them screwing my car up trying to rectify their dishonesty with emissions a la Volkswagen.

Anyone had this done & noticed anything different??

Thanks. This is my concern. I bought my 320D due to the amount of miles, type of journey I do & I've been delighted with the economy so far consistently getting high 50's low 60's mpg.

My uncle had a Passat in for their 'update'. After that the car never run properly, had crap mpg & they couldn't sort it despite many visits to the dealership. In the end it was that bad he sold it & bought a Citroen!

Anyone else have any first hand experiences of this 'update'??

You are lucky if you can get those sort of figures!
My F31 LCI 320D Sport Auto does 45-46 mpg in general driving and perhaps 50 mpg on long runs. Love the car but mpg is miles away from BMW stated figures. MPG is a big disappointment for me!

Looks like there is a genuine issue with the EGRs in some engines and this has been going on for a while:

Interesting, thanks.

Dealer said it was more to check if it was working within parameters & to update the software. Sounds to me more like an emissions cover up issue.

Sheesh the other day I did 230 odd miles to Solihull and back and averaged 40.5 (at the petrol station) from my 340i!

I also suspect this is more of a recall issue than anything particularly sinister. The 20d engine is amazing all except the EGR, which is apparently made of playdough. Our last 2 20d engined cars have gotten through 3 EGRs between them in 2 years.

I had the EGR recall carried out around 6 months ago. The car runs fine as before but it is using 5% more fuel.

I have booked the car in for another service for later this week and I have reported the increased fuel consumption. The dealer said it is the first time they have had any one report higher fuel consumption after the EGR replacement

I had mine done a few weeks ago after my EGR failed. I've actually been getting better MPG, constantly over 54+ mpg where as before it would be just under 50.

Not surprised to see a positive result among the negative comments.

Depending on the mode of failure, we can expect both better or less mpg. Those now seeing lower mpg may have been running with less EGR and more NOx emissions.

If the failure mode is giving too much EGR, a new EGR valve with values within tolerance, better mpg may well result.

A further observation... I've noticed when discussing real world mpg figures, some comment on how low a figure they get while cruising, compared to another user in the same model. (A lot of 20d users do seem to report low mpg). I suspect if there is an issue with the car itself, it is most likely EGR that is at the centre of the problem.

It is not a new thing, EGR has always been responsible for some mpg issues, when erratic or faulty. Perhaps BMW know more than they are letting on, the 'quality enhancement' is quietly checking and hopefully sorting the problem.

Mpg dumped by 10% straight after EGR “enhancement”, emailed BMW but referred to dealer who said they had never heard of this before?
I was immediately suspicious this was a well known problem within BMW, and the enhancement programme is a VW SAGA by stealth.
EGR cooler now leaking.
BMW will have all the statistics, ranks of dishonesty.
