Oil Filter Housing Gasket Leak Repair recommendations
I am located in northern California in the central valley.
Anybody have any recommendations for any shops that can do this service at an affordable price. Im being quoted $750+ out the door which is absolutely crazy. Of course this would happen after my warranty expired... smh... Any recommendations are appreciated

I don't know any shops in Stockton, but I used to go to EDGE motorsports in Dublin, CA (next to Pleasanton/Livermore). They do great work and are probably about 60% of the price of the dealership. I also used to go to Motorspeed West in Santa Clara which is in the South Bay. They do good work and are pretty cheap.
the OFH gasket is probably one of the most common service items on modern BMW engines. Any shop that does BMW work with any regularity would be able to do it blind folded. |

Just out of curiosity...
There are no special tools required, correct? Just simple hand tools and a Bentley manual? |

Oil Filter Housing Gasket Leak Repair recommendations
I had this done under warranty on my e92 along with the valve cover gasket. Priced out around 600 in DC area. I think the valve cover was around 800. If it was out of warranty I would have gone DIY. There are some good write ups and videos.

Let me know if you need a garage/tools/spare hand! 5.5hrs does seem strangely high. Especially for a common repair... I wonder if shop times are ever revised from day one when no one is familiar with a vehicle to now when the body code has changed (7+ years). Obviously there are tech's that know these cars like the back of their hand by now - as you said. |

I bought a bunch of tools of amazon and fcpeuro so i should be good. im gonna do it this weekend when i have the time. techs know their stuff, but they are looking up everything in a manual and going off that. and as a shop they are always gonna do what they can to maximize profit so they will always jew you... charging 120$/hr at 5.5 hours to unscrew the housing and replace gaskets??? no thanks... charging the same price as dealerships... smh...

Yep. Always a savings DIY and a lot of stuff can be done with proper planning, patience and tools.
Niello in Elk Grove charges $175 per hour labor. That's a quick grand for the job your talking about! Good luck with repair. |

Costs me 150 for impact wrench, torx socket kit and gaskets... Still can't believe a shop quoted me 5.5 hours of labor. Big shout out to Youtube DIY videos and f30post.

It's insane that you can basically buy yourself all the tools you'd ever need to work on your car simply by doing the work yourself, in addition to saving a ton of money. |

which process did you follow?
i've seen two 1. back off the bolt under the intake with a special wrench just far enough to get the old gasket out and new one in 2. remove the intake looks like i'm going to be doing the wife's soon, local dealership wants $850 for just the oil filter gasket |

Random observation... Not that I really give a sh!t but I wonder why one of the gaskets isnt OEM? Kinda strange... OEM gasket set on eBay is just under $50 all in. Doesn't include the other stuff though. Hm. Just thinking out loud... not sure what the best decision is? Are the other parts included with the kit necessary or are just the OEM gaskets good enough? I honestly dont know and am open for advice/opinions. That what I love about this place! |

For gaskets I'd go OEM. Note that the 328i has its gaskets and kit listed on this page (previous link was for the N55):
https://www.fcpeuro.com/BMW-parts/32...14&m=20&e=2122 The gasket itself costs the same but the kit doesn't include nearly as much stuff. The bolts are reused all the time and rarely have issues. If they're aluminum you definitely want to replace them. If steel, it's not necessary. My philosophy is that if you're doing it at home, you're already saving a ton of money, just replace the bolts if they're aluminum. They only cost a couple bucks. |
