4matic always sounded like 80's-era badging for a four-speed transmission rather than an AWD system.

When BMW began offering awd they saw it as a utility their customers in inclement weather climates wanted, not an enhancement to sportiness. They still mostly see it that way, though they are beginning to see a greater need to compete with Quattro from a sportiness perspective.

New M5 will have AWD. I hope they will come up with a better name than xDrive.

I see it exactly this way. I may take a round off from BMW, come back in 5 or 6 years, and see how far they have gotten. I'm sick of having to choose between all wheel drive and a proper suspension in a sport sedan.

This. I think the current implementation of xDrive is a huge step forward over the E9x. The weight gain for the xDrive system seems minimal. But in terms of the F3x cars, it's just not there yet in comparison to the Audi S4's Quattro with a Sport Differential. (That is not to say that the car as a whole is not better than the S4. This is strictly the AWD drivetrain.)

AFAIK, there is no difference in the implementation of xDrive between E9x and F3x. There was a change from the E46 to the E9x - it gained the front/rear variable split transfer case that was already in use on the X3 and X5.

There is the ability to buy the adaptive suspension on F3x; perhaps that's what you mean?

Sorry. Semantics.

What I was referring to was weight penalty. I believe the AWD weight penalty for the E9x was greater.

Tires I used were Sottozero 3, and disabled DSC/DTC.

Sorry for buddy's crappy iphone quality.

Quattro with the Torsen, might be a better system but the ultra quattro is a glorified haldex. So a standard A4 5 6 7 and Q5 will get the Ultra.
In normal driving condition is a FWD, with the rear axle decoupled. Is supposed to be so fast that you won’t know the difference but I’ll take an xdrive every day where 40 is already on the front.

Somewhat puzzled why this thread hasn't attracted at least 2K posts on a polarizing topic of all times.

Unless the trip includes a detour to climb Pikes Peak in blizzard like conditions, any modern AWD drivetrain with proper snow tires will be sufficient for daily driving.

Tires. Tires. And again tires.
