Jumping into stage 1

Hey folks,

I've owned a 2013 335i xDrive F30 for about a year and with some bonus checks, I am itching for more power. Few questions:

Charge pipe - https://x-ph.com/evolution-racewerks...rge-pipes-n55/ This seem correct?

Intercooler - https://www.vr-speed.com/vrsf-interc...i-n20-n55.html This seem correct?

I just bought Bimmer link and have been playing around with it. Other than sport transmission, what else would constitute a stage 1 enhancement in the app?

I'll be doing the work myself. I owned a 335D and did lots of repairs to it so 335s aren't new to me.

I appreciate your time and attention. Happy driving!

I got the same charge pipe after numerous other users said ER had the best fitment by far.

Can't speak to the intercooler, but again, consensus from the forums seems like VRSF has problems with fitment.

But you're on the right track, charge pipes can fail even at stock boost (like mine did), so definitely replace it sooner than later, especially if you want to tune. Intercooler isn't required for stage 1, but would be for stage 2, along with other supporting mods like a downpipe. So if you're not going beyond stage 1, i would hold off on the IC.

Bimmerlink isnt a flash tune. You're thinking of Bootmod3 or MHD - which lets you put any sort of tune you want on the car, from stage 1 to 2+ and anything in between. If you hurry, BM3 is on sale. I just ordered mine!

Thanks for the info. I'm not sure if I'm willing to invest the 600 for the bootmod3 considering my next car after this one is going to be a P90 tesla D. Does that fee give you the program for life? MHD ironically also agreed with you that stage 1 doesn't need an IC. So, maybe just the charge pipe for now.

For the cost of the app, why not go stage 2 anyway? Other than CP, IC and BM3, do you need to do down pipe for stage 2? Does this end of life you engine faster?

Ain't nothing ironic about it, I didn't just make that up!

Yeah the cost is a one time fee and gives you access to software updates as long as they support it. BM3 does let you sell/transfer the license one time. So if you get rid of the car, you can deactivate the tune on the car and sell the license. You'll see some For Sale threads in the classifieds section of the forum. (Or if you get another BMW you could simply transfer the license over)

As for going to stage 2 without supporting mods, I know BM3 is software and gives you lots of freedom to change settings, but you can't just turn a dial and have your engine output more power than it is physically capable of. To hazard a guess to your question, if you tried to run stage 2 without a down pipe, i imagine the tune would try to increase boost and fueling, but your ECU would see that there is a restriction downstream and then dial back the settings, so you wouldn't get any real benefit anyway. But i'm no expert - that's just my guess.

If your concern is not wanting to go catless downpipe because of emissions inspections, i totally understand. The other thing you could try is, there are lots of custom tuners out there who could come up with a tune that takes your car's specific upgrades (whatever you end up doing - like intake, FMIC, catback exhaust, etc) and create a tune that takes specific advantage of your setup to give you the most bang for your buck. There might even already be some out there for sale like that.

Mike,

Great to chat with you. Last quick ?, can't I just reuse the O ring and body clip? It's 40 bucks ....if I don't need to spend it etc. Also is a downpipe required for stage 2?

Yes you can re-use the stock C-clip and O-ring
