I saw this and it irritated me intensely. Loads of news channels calling it a "2001 monolith".
Monolith is Greek. Mono - single. Lithos - stone. Its metal, so it's not a monolith. And it's a completely different shape from the thing in Space Odyssey. But yeah, let's go with "2001 monolith", cos it sticks up out the ground. |

The desert artists out here are a determined and creative bunch. The location of this object is so far out in the boonies that the rangers are not letting on for fear of the unprepared getting themselves stuck and/or dead out in the desert. How it was originally placed there I cannot guess.

I'd just like to point out how dangerous and irresponsible this news story is.
Who the hell would perform the world renowned 'counting sheep' while flying a helicopter!!??? :It's a small miracle the monolith isn't their gravestone.
