Diesel Fuel Treatment
I have a 328d and I'm just curious on you-all's opinions on running fuel treatment. Should I run it every tank or isn't it important at all? Thanks

I run Hot Shot Secret's Everyday Diesel Treatment at each fill up (1.5 ounces per tank). I use their Diesel Extreme treatment every 6 months (larger amount added to diesel tank). The idea is to improve lubricity of fuel since HPFP depends on fuel to lubricate and cool itself. And to disperse any water that may be in the fuel. Cannot comment if EDT is doing anything, I can tell you with diesel extreme (due to larger volume), I noticed less soot is produced per DPF calculating its soot mass. My car would go extra 200 miles before regen happens again when I run diesel extreme.
Project Farm did a series on You Tube for diesel anti-gelling, with Hot Shot being one of the best. When you compare MSDS, you will see their entire product line is basically same ingredients at slightly different concentrations. Many forum members here use same additive as well, I started using it at their recommendation. Watch out, though, the EDT stinks and stays with you once you get it on your hands. May be prudent to carry disposable gloves with you for each fill up. |

+1 on Hot Shot products. Good stuff.
I've also used Stanadyne products with good results. Then there are the more common ones like Power Service and Howe's. They've all worked for their intended purpose for me in all my dieseling over the years.

According to their tech sheets their diesel treatments are the same as almost all diesel treatment.
I.e. they're simply 50% 2EHN with 2-17% 'trade secret' stuff. Maybe just buy 5L of pure 2EHN instead for $50? It's what I used to use in my 180,000 mile e46 330D (auto-box died). Not needed it in the 40,000 mile F31 yet. |

I’ve been using the Power Service treatment in the white bottle year round. Seems to do the job. I’ve tried Hot Shots, probably placebo effect but the car maybe seemed to run a tiny bit better.

I've mostly been using Opti-Lube Summer+. But also used DieselKleen and Propel Diesel HPR (biomass diesel meeting ASTM D975). Here's some stats
Opti-Lube w/ #2: 34.26MPG over 17,724 miles HPR untreated: 33.46MPG over 14,567 miles DieselKleen w/ #2: 37.41 MPG over 4,599 miles Once I deplete my bottle of Summer+, I might move over to XPD.

I've used (and logged) Power Service Diesel Kleen, Howe's, Hot Shots EDT, and have just started testing Amsoil Diesel All in One courtesy of Carolina Performance Synthetics, who are also 328d enthusiasts!

I've been running treated diesel on my F31 from Day 1, and before that on my TDIs. So I dont have a baseline to compare to. That said, I did give a single tank treatment of Summer+ to a coworker's PowerStroke F-150 and he said the engine ran smoother and quieter on the treated tank. Some updated stats for my car: Opti-Lube w/ #2: 33.74MPG over 30,401 miles HPR untreated: 33.39MPG over 14,972 miles DieselKleen w/ #2: 37.41 MPG over 4,599 miles

I use Optilube and Liquimoly. When I first got the car, I would notice more soot around the exhaust. I started using optilube right away and now I never notice soot buildup around the exhaust.

I don’t know if it is correlation or causation. Could be just that it is now driven properly aka Italian tune up, but mine was sooty when I bought it and I cleaned it once, and now it is so clean inside even a year later you can see the manufacturing marks inside the pipe itself.
Is it optilube, or not, I wouldn’t venture to guess but it sure is cleaner than any gas car I’ve ever owned or seen.

Been adding 300ml (per 60litres of fuel ) of low ash 2 stroke mineral oil to my 35d for 3 years. Car idles, sounds and performs better. IMO This should be a must in the states where the diesel is rubbish and is responsible for HPFP failures, the 2 stroke lubricates everything and stops this issue. The other big benefit is that the diesel burns more completely with much less black particles which should in turn reduce carbon buildup. This video shows how good it is compared to some of the more expensive products

Since biodiesel degrades much quicker than regular diesel I'd be more concerned with stabilizers (biocides) for that. Depends on what is added to it in the first place. |
