Pushing brake pistons back on M performance

I've bought some new OEM pads for my 330D with M sport brakes

Looks very simple with removing the pins, do people normally replace the pins or put the old pins back in ? Looks like BMW recommend 4 years and they should be replaced, does that sound right

Also without removing the brake what the best way of getting all 4 pistons pushed back. What tool do people use and is it best to keep the old pads in whilst doing this

I've done loads of single floating style pads but not a fixed 4 piston system.

I have checked the rotor and its 29.3MM thick so no need to replace them this time around

Thanks

The old pins/spring will be fine, mine have done 70k now.

You can push the pistons in by hand, obviously loosen the reservoir cap first (and remember to tighten at the end!), do one side, put that pad in then do the other side.

I bought one of these tools though, makes it really quick and easy in combination with an impact wrench!

Agree - you don't need anything fancy - decent sized flat bladed screwdrivers between the disc and the two pads does the job to lever the pistons evenly back... and I have reused pins with no issues...

A G clamp and a thin piece of wood on the piston gets it back easier than levering with screwdrivers.

+1 on teaston's brake pad spreader. I've been using one of those for years and cars & bikes. I also re greased the pins. Just use something suitable to knock them out with so as not to damage the paintwork on the calliper.

One of these does the job perfectly:
