Not thrilled with loan car whilst waiting for my 335d...
Hi all.
My dealer has very kindly given me a 116d sport as a sweetener whilst I'm waiting for my 335d to arrive. I know these two cars are completely different but the most annoying thing about the loan car is the road / tyre noise (and the basic spec)...It really is quite loud It's so much louder than my old Merc C220cdi estate that I'm now starting to worry about my 335d I did notice that it seemed louder on my test drive but I've had the 116 for a week now and on the motorway it's pretty irritating. My Merc had 17" non-run flats so should I be concerned about 18" run flats on my new car??? Does the cabin noise seem louder because it's not as refined as a 3 series or should I expect very similar on my 335? I feel a bit down to be honest when really I should be excited at this point Maybe the fact that my car is delayed isn't helping the situation either... Can anyone offer any words of encouragement??? Please be gentle if not TIA |

I have a 335d, my wife a 116i.
There is a vast difference in refinement between the two, don't be concerned as you'll love it! Whilst the F30 is no 5 series in terms of noise, I found it an overall better (subjectively) car.

I've got a 318d as a loaner and I'm pretty happy with it, apart from the diesel noise and the turbo lag. Would be interested in a 335d if they sold them here, but they don't, so...
PS: an old saying, "beggars can't be choosers" or "don't look a gift horse in the mouth"

I havn't driven a 1 series but I did have an X1 for the day and there was definitely more road noise than the F30. I also have 19s on my car so it should be slightly worse than 18s for road noise, but it was still much quieter than the X1. I assume there is just less structural mass to deaden the noise between the engine bay and wheels, 5 series would obviously be better though.

In fairness my 335d seems a little noisy but not terribly. It sounds like this may work in your favour as jumping straight from the merc may have made it more noticeable, the 1 series will have acted as a good buffer.

Yes with run flats cabin noise is a touch louder but it is offset by the engine not having to work as hard as the 4 pot in the merc. Also let me tell you that coming from a 220cdi into a 335d you are not going to give a flying fudge about an ever so slightly louder cabin. The two cars are worlds apart. You will be far too busy enjoying the literally hundreds of better things about the f30. |

I find the road (tyre) noise on 19s average...not great but not bad. Will be interesting to see what it's like next week on non run flat 18"winters.
On a real plus point the engine noise is very refined and dare I say sporty |

Agreed, it seemed like an odd car, steering very heavy, not sure who it's aimed at really, seemed to appeal to the older generation but the heavy steering would put them off

When buying my F30 I drove a C220CDI (2013 model) back to back with the 320d and the BMW wipes the floor with the Merc. I daresay the C-class is quieter, but you'll be having so much fun with the BMW's handling that you just won't notice!

Before putting in my order I test drove the Audi A4, which was ok did what it said on the tin but nothing else, then I drove the bmw in which I really didnt want to take back, I loved how engaged the driver is with the car, then I drove the C220d and the 1st thing I honestly thought when driving home was how noisy the engine was. I did like the merc when I eventually got use to the noise, however there is so many items of the bmw that are better, you will not be disappointed
