Hood Insulation ripped
Hello,
I just purchased a EBII 2015 328i xDrive and loving it. I purchased the car through carvana and noticed when I opened the hood, the hood liner/insulation right underneath the hood is ripped and there is some white foamy material underneath. Is it okay to just remove the hood insulation/liner or do I need to replace it? Also does anyone know what that white foam might be? Thank you. |

Yes, its safe to remove any liner and foam on the hood, it's for sound insulation and nothing else. I would keep the engine cover and the engine foam under that on to protect it from dust. I live near the beach where sand gets blown everywhere, and the engine cover / foam makes a difference to keep the engine clean.

I think it is there mostly for sound insulation, you should be fine removing it.

There could potentially be some functional benefits beyond sound insulation. It could potentially help keep heat in the engine bay (for warmup or efficiency) or off the hood. It could also be a protective layer in case there are any fluid leaks under the hood. For only $95, I think I'd just replace it. Even if it's there for some functional reason, I can't imagine you'd cause any serious damage by leaving it off, though.
