THAT is the question. My guess is that BMW hasn't checked to see what, if any, barrel inside diameter standards exist for a given wheel size. They do know that BMW 18" wheels _just_ fit over the bigger brakes. We may well be stuck with trial and error for all non-BMW 18" wheels.

Just got off of the phone with the Genius. Rather than answering our question, I was given a part number of the only BMW wheel that they would suggest I use for those 8 weeks each year (not bloody likely) - 36 11 2 362 008. I have not been able to look that wheel up yet but I'd suspect that it is the rim that my car currently has with its summer tires on it. I think that we need to infer that BMW either assumed that everyone with M-Sport brakes will be running 19" wheels or they tried one of their own 18" and it fit so they assumed that everyone's 18" wheels would fit. Tire Rack would't exactly say that only some 18" wheels fit but they did send me a subset of their 18" wheels that they "suggest" either because they were the only ones that fit or because they have a bigger margin. I can't tell.

Net-net. It seems that we need to either try before we buy or only buy from firms with deep pockets and a solid return policy.

Yes, unfortunately on my end it also seems to be that just trial and error seems to be the only answer at this point. The only way to save you trouble would be if you had the rims that you could test fit first before pulling the trigger. I know some places like VMR will allow this while others, not so much. I just went with 19s to avoid the hassle. You could just measure the end of the caliper to the inner barrel of say our stock M Sport rims but I was too lazy to ever do it lol

On a side note however to those contemplating which size is better, I think 19s suit our car so much better. 18s seem a tad bit too small unless you like the small rim meaty tire look for the most part

I'm not against 19s for looks but am worries that for winter wheels, they would be just that much more fragile when driving into snow-hidden potholes.

Not necessarily, it's going to depend on the process of the wheel (cast, forged, flow form etc) My 19s are stronger then the stock M Sport 18s

One more inch of rubber (18" wheels instead of 19") will certainly smooth winter ride...no ?

It will be smoother if it isn't a low profile or series tire. I am running 35 series and it's perfect on my 19s.

Hi Dominic,
I'm in a similar boat (2014 335ix M brake, M Perfo) and I am looking for 18" wheels that fit over the big brakes... (my car comes with 19").

How did your Apex performed in the snow? No issue with the tight fitting?

You can clear it with a wheel manufacturer, but most of aftermarket 18s will feet a BBK, I have went with Apex for that matter. 255/40/18 245/40/18 and 18x9.5 et 35 18x8 et 30

Planning on getting a bbk this winter

Does this mean the 18" wheels like style 397, 400m won't fit on a 435 xdrive? Some other posts seem to imply that they would (e.g. https://f30.bimmerpost.com/forums/sh....php?t=1424327, https://f30.bimmerpost.com/forums/sh....php?t=1186206).

I’ve found that many 18s will fit with/over the big M Brakes, but many also don’t.

And it isn’t JUST due to width/offset. It’s mostly due to the profile (cross-section) shape of the wheel center - if it follows too straight a path from hub to rim, with not enough arc out away from the hub it causes wheel ‘spoke’ interference with the caliper. It’s generally not barrel interference with 18”s (much more likely with 17s) with these brakes.

For example, 18x8 wheels with offsets in the range 29-36 will likely work IF the wheel center is arched enough shape to clear the front M Brakes. If it’s a square setup, and the fronts clear, the rears definitely will too (smaller rotor and caliper).

I suspect any of the M wheels BMW offers in 18” for the F3x will likely fit over M Brakes..
