can iDrive controller in hu_entry be upgraded to touch controller? YES! (SOLVED)

I'm not interested in the touch functionality, I wanna do this just for looks and feel.
I recently got to drive my father's F10 with professional navi and just LOVED the look and feel of the bigger knob.

I have a 2016 420i F32 with professional radio, no nav. I do get music through bluetooth from my phone but no album cover. The HU does have fiber optic cables.

I've searched and searched but I'm getting lost in a sea of HU options, Kcan1 vs 2, wiring and coding and I can't quite make heads or tails of it all.

Can I just expect the touch controller to be plug&play except for the touch functions? Will there be any coding required? Or will I need the full emulator+harness+kcan rewiring mess?

Thanks in advance for your patience and best regards!

If you have a 2014+ you can just plug in the touch controller as is and no additional wiring would be required since your controller is already wired for BODY CAN

Excellent! thank you!

In my case it's a 2016 so there shouldn't be a problem.

Actual touch control WILL require the separate module right?

Yes that's correct, if you want to use the touch features then yeah you will need the ecu

Confirmed! Worked straight away, even though it's bad practice I didn't disconnect the battery or even turn the car fully off. Just pulled the connector off the puny one and plugged it straight into the Pro one and it just worked. It's even recognizing the up and down movements, even though they aren't any use anywhere in the system since the hu-entry GUI just doesn't have anywhere to use them. Obviously touch is a no go either, since no touch ECU and no NBT software to do so is present in HU_entry. So far I'm very happy, would definately recommend to anyone with a 2014+ F30.

Every single one of them works except the NAV button which doesn't do anything, since HU_entry doesn't have nagivation.

Surprisignly, both the Media and the Radio button work and do what it says on the tin. I say surprisingly because the previous controller only had a single Audio button.

The rotation and push action are lot more positive and satisfying than the entry model. Plus it looks a lot cooler than the smaller one. I'd have and gone for the ceramic model, but they are hard to find and easily 3x the price. This was only around 100 bucks plus shipping. That must be AWESOME to the touch.

Hi

My car have the second gen of your original idrive, it’s like the new one but the circle botton is small.
I would love to install one like the new one you have but I don’t know if I need to install other hardware or just only the idrive. What do you think?

My car is 420d, 12/2015 month/Year production with hu_entrynav.

Thanks in advance

Will this be a plug and play option on a 2013 F30 with business nav?

Hi. I have a 2015 F30, and the navi system apparently is the Entry Nav. I've just bought the touch controller, but i'm not fully convinced that i need the ECU for it or it won't work at all with my unit. Can someone please advise? Thanks

It should work absolutely fine without needing the ECU but you just won't have the touch functionality.

I have a 2014 F30 and I had Entrynav without navigation. Before I'd put my NBT unit in, I swapped the controller out and it worked perfectly with no messing around.
