To Tire Rack. How do I activate/wake my tpms sensors?

Bought a tire/wheel setup from you guys for winter.

Installed them. Tried resetting and it locks up at 49% and fails.
Sometimes it stays at 0% and then fails.

I have deflated and reinflated the tires to correct psi. Doesn’t work. Still won’t reset. I have disconnected my battery and tried again. Nothing. Tried different things all week. Nothing.

Stuck my summer setup back on and it relearned everything before I even left the driveway. Stuck winter setup back and it fails at 49% or 0% again.

How do I check to see which tpms sensor is off or not working? Is there a way I can wake them so my car can see them.

Didn’t pay all that money to see a low tire light all winter.

Thanks

Ok. Took it to a shop. Sensors are all active and transmitting. Why won’t it connect to car? Will try it one more day then will have local place remove and replace and send them back to Tire Rack for a refund.

They maybe the wrong sensors? TPMS's on the Fseries chassis are year and model specific. Did you compare them to RealOEM's part #?

I didn’t read the scanner. Tpms sensors were installed by tire rack when i bought the wheel/tire setup so I never looked at them. I’m hoping they installed the correct ones since I had to list my year/make. I will take pics of the sensors once i find a place to take them out that works with my schedule.

For TPMS your car build date is also very important info as BMW changed sensors mid year on some models

I thought the changeover was back in ‘14 or ‘15. Mine’s an ‘18 with a production date of 3/17.

Call the Tire Rack. I had the same problem on my set that I bought at the end of September on my '15 F31 Wagon. Would get to 49% and then fail. Seems that they got a bad batch of sensors and are now sending me out replacements and will make me whole with the installation.

I did. They didn't offer me that. It took them forever to get back to me as well.

They offered me:

Please have someone remove them and replace them locally. They said they will send UPS to pick them back up and refund me for the tpms sensors. If they determine they were defective, they will pay up to $26 or something for the labor to remove them. SO, I'm going to be out $$ for something I shouldn't have to be out $$.

I'm pretty sure they are defective and since they don't work. I'm stuck in court all day today and tomorrow because numbskull won't take a plea deal then back to work so I'm not going to have time to take it somewhere till next week to get the defective ones removed and will have the local place install new ones.

I lowered them all to 25 then back up to 31/43 this morning and it failed at 49% again.
Yesterday I tried 35/45 and 35/35 and neither worked either.
I tried using the tpms wake switch that my ex had with her winter/snow setup on her Camaro and it didn't do anything. Not sure if GM is using 315 or 433 MHz on her car, but I had no issues resetting her tpms system.

If you are willing to try to call TireRack again, maybe try our forum sponsor? Or just call again, different agents provide different levels of service (at least its what I've found to be true with bigger companies).

I emailed rudy last week. Maybe it got lost in spam. They’re picking a jury in the morning I’m going to try and get the sensors replaced tomorrow. I’m headed to Fort Bragg next week so I need this done before my trip.

Ten days and 375 miles of aggravation are over. $260 later, sensors removed and replaced locally. TPMS reset just fine with the new sensors.

All four say 433MHz. Just can’t figure out why they wouldn’t sync with the car.

Waiting for Tire Rack to send UPS label now.

I’m been having the same issue—winter tire/wheel package from TR. I really like the combo, except for this. Invoice shows they used correct hw — yup batch of bad ones I guess.

I did just about everything OP went through. And also verified the installed sensors were alive. No matter what though -- 49% fail...

Glad to hear replacing the sensors fixed it, I was about to hit my dealer for a possible RDC failure, and of course might be looking at paying if it was the sensors.. Now I’ll get em swapped at my friends tire shop.

Tom

I was only sent replacement set of sensors by TR. No offer to cover TPMS swap.

Hey tire rack. This is really inefficient. You’re sending ups to my house instead of emailing me a label? I work crazy shifts. I drive past a ups store everyday. It would be easier to email me the label. I don’t mind printing it. Years and years of buying from tire rack with no issues and then this one issue is getting tiresome.

I left for work at 1pm. UPS showed up at 1:07. Thankfully my neighbor was home and gave UPS the box. Let’s see if Tire Rack refunds me for the sensors and black valve stems and pays me for the new install labor. This will determine if I ever buy from Tire Rack again. I shouldn’t have to do all that. That was the whole point of buying sesnors from them with the wheels and tires. Wasted over a week on this issue when it was supposed to be simple. If they knew they had a bad batch they should’ve been more proactive at fixing it.

This is the email they sent.

Hello,

At this time the best option would be to remove and return the TTR S155 sensors for testing/warranty analysis and purchase replacements locally.

We can refund you for the sensors. If we find that the sensors are incorrect or defective we will also reimburse up to $25.00 per wheel for the labor to have them removed. Please let us know when they have been removed and we will have UPS out to your home to pick them up.
—-

It leads me to believe they might not reimburse me because the sensors were all active and transmitting. My car just wouldn’t recognize them. Ball’s in Tire Rack’s court now.

EXACTLY. My guess is this faulty batch of TPM sensors had issues with their accelerometers. Likely the radio part works fine - they're alive and broadcasting correctly - but they have no or bad accelerometers, so the reset can't complete.

We get a TMPS reset fail at 49% with these bad TPM sensors (the reset works fine up to that point, then freezes there instead of any further climb in completion percentage - then it fails). According to the TIS docs I've read the RDC reset procedure is 4 steps:

1. Recognize the sensors
2. Identify the position of the wheels (axle assignment & direction of rotation)
3. Plausibility check of tire pressure (specified vs. minimum)
4. Adoption of specified pressures as nominal

So I think the TPMS Reset failing at "49% complete" means it can't finish step 2. The system uses signal strength to figure out front vs. rear axle, but it needs the accelerometers to figure direction of rotation (& left/right). The signal strength calculation also only includes info from wheels rotating in the same direction, so it can't figure that out fully either. It's stuck. Even if the sensors had/have working temperature/pressure units..

So hopefully the TR folks should understand that the TPMs can be bad because they have faulty sensors yet have a working radio...

Tom

Is Rudy on vacation?

Tirerack refunded me for two sensors and the four black valve stems.
No credit for having to have them locally replaced.

I returned four sensors. I'm going to call my credit card company and see what my options are for defective purchases.

At this point I just want a refund for the other two sensors. I’ll deal with the install charge.

If you paid by credit card, just the dispute the entire charge since Tire Rack didn't provide what you bought. That will get their attention and get back to you.

I was getting ready to do that on the 1st. Today the refund for the other two sensors showed up. They emailed and said they were waiting for them to return to inventory.
I didn’t get any $$ towards labor for the new sensors since Discount Tire didn’t charge me labor but the sensors they installed cost more than Tire Rack so in the end, I’m out about $100.
