MHD stage 2 without dp

I know going with a dp is recommended but im in CA so i don't want to deal with the hassle of taking off and putting on the downpipe for emissions. So i was wondering if I can run stage 2 with just an intercooler, chargepipe and exhaust without any problems.

I emailed mhd this exact question and got the following response

"
you can run the stage 2 without any mods yes (a upgraded chargepipe is recommended) but the stage 2+ requires the recommended mods.

What year is your car? You know, you now have 8 years before having to do emissions. DP has more improvements other than just being able to run stage 2+ properly.

2015. I thought smog was 5 years from new. If its eight years might as well go for the downpipe then.

No. Run Stage 1+.

There is no free lunch. Run the tune to suit your mods.

i find this interesting.. so i'm not a tuner but i kind of understand that tuning is messing with the engine air fuel ratios to get more power out of the motor. so if you tune a car to "stage 2" which typically requires some bolt ons in most cars... if you don't have those recommended parts with the tune then i would think the ecu would pull timing and not run as well.. specially when it's hot outside (heat soak).

i guess this all depends on the tune you're running but would that suck if you flashed a pretty aggressive stage 2 map and then you get a few misfire codes and the knock sensor detects engine knock. i'm not a BMW expert in any way but sounds definitely possible.. not enough for me to want to put a stage 2 tune on my car when i'm clearly stage 1 lol..

correct me if i'm wrong though. I would like to know, thanks!
