Purchase Advice on 428i

Hey Guys, so I posted a thread couple days ago about choosing between a 2015 428i GC and a 2014 435i Coupe. Thankful for everybody's comment, really helped a ton.

However as I am leaning toward the 428i I also acknowledge the problem that many of you warned me about in the thread: the timing chain in the N20 that's prone to malfunctioning. However, with the extreme low mileage on the car 23k miles only, I still decided to check out the car.

I took some pictures of the interior, as well as the undercarriage. I also focused on the timing chain by opening up the cover. I didn't take pictures of the exterior as it is basically like new.

Very new to BMW, so is there anything that looks suspicious/I should ask about? The timing chain feels tight when I tried to maneuver it, and there is no "death whine" when I rev the car to 3k-4k rpm. What do you guys think? Currently still negotiating the price with the seller.

Thanks in advance!

Sweet car. I'd go for it. Although there is technically some risk since its before 2015... that risk is very minimal.

Considering the mileage is so low... the risk is even less so long as you plan to maintain and take care of the car properly from here on out.

I have 94k miles on my N20 (2014 build). No issues!

It was in the original thread. 19.9k

OP, it's a clean car. Stay on top of preventative maintenance and regular maintenance and pray that timing chain doesn't fail. hopefully it doesn't bro but good luck if you decide to purchase!

Thanks everybody for the reply! Trying my best to be the "shrewd negotiator" and get the price down to 18800 ish. Seems like proper maintenance, especially oil change, should keep the car healthy?

Car looks very clean, I presume it's a California car, correct?

I'd have have the owner provide all service/repair records, check accident history and pay a BMW or Euro shop mechanic do a pre-purchase inspection...on a used Bimmer that $150 is worth it's weight in gold (I speak from 15 years experience buying/own used BMW's). The shop should among other things pull the plastic belly pans and inspect the underside of the motor and transmission (leaks, etc.).

Good luck/Bill

check the date code on the tires. you should never use tires older than 5 years old no matter the miles

Agreed with Wgosma above. Since this is not CPO (and probably the original warranty is about to, or have expired), a PPI would be a wise decision to check for leaks, bushings wear, etc.

Again, not trying to scare you, but just to share a relevant experience when low miles does not always tell the full story of a car: my SO's 2015 528i needs differential bushing replacement (cracked) around 25k. It seems way too early for bushing replacement, but it can happen. BMW would've charged >$1k, but ended up paying $500 to a very reputable indy in LA. So get it checked!

If everything comes clean - go for it! (or negotiate the price otherwise)

And by the way, TheWoo, props to you for doing all the due diligence before purchasing! Hope everything goes smoothly in the process. You deserve it.
