All those on EV tariffs, surely the peak cost is substantially higher than a non-EV flat-rate tariff?

Right now I’m on a 2 year fixed at 19p, that ends in September so wondering if it’s worth moving to an EV tariff (based on rates at the time of course) or just sticking with a flat-rate.

I doubt I’ll be arsed to switch the washing machine and tumble dryer to run overnight so the only benefit is likely to be charging the car.

Worst case I can charge at work for 50p per hour so that’s 7.14p.

It will be different for everyone. Looks to me like we use just 5-7kwh a day, even as a family of four, all lights are LED which might be helping. This one car charge of 55KWH is the equivalent of almost 20 days of ‘other’ for us. Obviously I don’t just drive 280 miles a month so the 3-4 fill up I do are well worth the upchage on the other.
On my Octopus Intelligebt tarring is 7.5p and 40p. Previously on Octopus Flexible it was all 34p. This another 6p a kWh for 5-7kwh normal use is good for me.

In my usual style that is unlikely to have been typed very well.

…and here’s last nights charge. I put 17Km h in to actually fill the Y RWD for a change. That’s almost 1/4 of the 260 miles for …..£1.29… and I know LFP and battery chemistry improves all the time but that was the top end of the battery which historically takes a bit more ooomph to encourage those electrons in.

LOLOL

Random anonymous appliance white MY pic for no reason. Might name it blob. Currently Storm Trooper 🤦🏻

I do around 15000 miles per year. Costs £3318 according to £1.46 / l 30mpg. Same journey done on 9p/kwh octopus go assuming i get 3mi/kwh works out at£ 450(I hope my maths is right).
So could save around 2.5k plus / yr by switch to EV. Its tempting. The fly in the ointment of course of depreciation as current cars are kind of over the worst but the ev powertrain is the plus

Part B if a plug in hybrid gives me 30 miles on full charge thats 10920 miles/yr. Actually there's merit in considering that too as The majority of miles will be cheap and still have a petrol motor for those longer journeys. Cons are having to plus in every night.

....decisions... decisions

So I've had 2 days where the drive to work and back has been in pure electric
Cost of the commute using standard leccy 12 kwh×39p= £4.7
If I had the x5 30d @30mpg it would be nearly £6
So economically not a lot of sense unless on a special tariff!

Oh dear
I'm 2012 we moved into a newbuild and somehow our neighbours house which was twice the size of ours was being billed our bill and vive versa. Needless to say neighbour was reluctant to sort out as he had a year of low bills. If I recall it got so frustrating and I may have given up.on it and changed providers just to get relief from double billing going ahead.

It looks like Octopus Go gives the low rate for 4 hours a day (00:30 to 04:30) so if you ever need more than about a 30% top up you’ll be paying the high rate (39.5p here). You’ll also be paying the high rate for almost all of your normal household usage, which probably adds a couple of hundred pounds to your bill at the current 5.5p premium to the Ofgem Cap.

I guess worth getting an insurance quote too in case that’s significantly higher. But it does look likely to be significantly cheaper to run than the X5 if we ignore depreciation.

I went from an X5 to an iX3 - did about 20k miles pa with the 40i engine (ouch).

Average fuel spend per month was just over £500 per mont and I’m now looking at £110 per month and only that much because I don’t have access to a family 7kW charger when in London, so need to recharge best case Ionity, worst case the other providers at 75p.

Once I can get a charger fitted at my parents, that cost will drop a fair bit.

Don’t regret the switch, just wish it was a nicer car!

Savings are much higher as the SalSac cost is much lower than PCP/insurance/servicing on the X5.

I’m probably the same as you - perfect combo would be X5 with Model Y drivetrain, which is probably the iX in 50i guise but the cost was going to be significantly more than the X5 and beyond my reach sadly.

Yeah I did consider the iX50 but it was way too expensive for what it is and in real terms, not a huge amount less for that via SS than overall monthly cost for the X5.

If I had to choose between X5 and iX50, I’d have kept the X5, tbh.

So less monthly payment for the x5 saving. ? 700. Fuel cost less by 400pm.
ix3 via salary sacrifice so monthlies ? 500. Money savings ? 600. I would trade into am ix3 gladly from.an x5 for that kind of money.
How do you find the drivetrain compared to the petrol x5?

I don't have monthlies on the G05 x5 and its depreciation seems to have been stuck ie px prices are the same they were over 3 years ago 30k miles on but this is at some point likely to change. Its a lot of car for the 43k. Its all confusing.

Completely different proposition when you own the car, I’m not sure I’d be rushing to exit the X5 in your position.
Off topic, but I still have the custom fit sun blinds in my garage ( https://www.carshades.co.uk/ ) for the G05 if they’re any use to you - mine didn’t come with them built in and even with privacy glass they were good for the kids.

FOC of course.

That's a very kind offer. Mine comes with it and gets regular use. If you're Glasgow way and want a coffee and another ride in the x5 lol let me know by pm.

My monthly PCP alone for the X5 was £150 higher than the SS cost for the iX3.

Once you add on the X5 fuel, insurance, tax, servicing etc, the iX3 is around £700 per month less.

Didn’t help I went for a well-specced X5 on 20k miles pa. That’s considering the X5 was with forces discount as well.

The iX3 was a total no-brainer, when you compare the costs.

The iX3 drivetrain is good and has the benefit of iDrive 7. Given the instant torque of the EV, it doesn’t feel like it’s worse in driving.

I do miss air suspension though, although to be fair the ride is better than my 2017 F30 M Sport LCI.

It’s an interesting read - there are a few mild EV sceptics, including me, who now have one. Plus there’s JustChris looking forward to taking delivery of his Z4
