N20 N26 f30 newbie questions.

Hello all, I am looking to buy a new daily and to be honest I always loved the way the f30 platform drove. It seems to have the perfect balance of comfort and sportiness for me. Anyway, I am looking to buy a 328i rwd 8 speed. There is one in particular that is a 2016 model, N26 SULEV engine with 57k miles. Are there any specific things I should look out for? I will be taking the car to a BMW dealer to get a PPI done. I did a little bit of research and found out that the n20/26 may have timing chain and/or guide failures. Is this true for a 2016 LCI 328i as well? Any replies will be appriciated. Thank you.

The timing chain problem applies to cars built before February 2015.

Thanks for the reply. How can I learn when the car I am looking for was built?

I believe if you have the last 7-digits of the VIN, you can plug them in at RealOem.com and it will populate the build date as well other data (series, model, etc. ) for the car. Then you can go on to see all (well a bunch) of the parts detail for the specific model car.

I believe there are also other VIN Decoders out there.

Thanks and yes I tried the Realoem website and the “prod month” says 02/2016 so I guess the timing chain issue does not apply?

There have been some failed guides/chains on n2x motors that are past the 2015 build year, but they appear to be VERY rare in comparison.

Good to hear. Is there a call back or something for this? Does BMW aknowledge this an an issue or is it just a problem users face out of bad luck...? Anyway. I’d like yo hear any kind of areas to look out for, too. Maybe even SULEV specific porblems .

There is a ton of info in this thread, as well as enough timing chain failures to cause me to trade for a 435i. I don't think the law suit they've recently settled covers 2016 models, as it's after the 2015 part update.
