Tire Size Debate

I've been reading the forum for a while trying to find out what size tires most people seem to be running but I've seen numbers all over the place and a lot of different wheel setups are also being done. I've got a stock (As far as wheels and suspension) 2014 328i Sport Line. I've got the 397 style 18"-8" wheels. I'm currently running a 235/40/18 all the way around but I'm forced to get some new rubber due to a combination of a nail in one tire and a lack of tread all the way around in general. I don't need help choosing a tire as much as I need help figured out the best size combination. I want to stick with a square setup, trying to stay away from anything staggered. I'm thinking a 245/35/18 is my best option, but I've read about people running 255's on the front. What are my options?

Run 245/40r18 square set up.
255 is aggressive for stock wheels.

Thanks for all the replies. I'm definitely going to go 245/40/18. Anyone have experience with the Nitto NeoGen tires? I really want something like the NT05 but that's not practical for me . I know I said I had the tire model figured out in the original post but I'm open to suggestions. Trying to stay in the sub-$650 for a set range. I've been buying tires off eBay lately and they seem to have some of the best deals.

245/40-18 or 245/45-18

Slightly shorter or taller alternative compared to OEM size.

are you looking for a summer only tire or all season? the conti dws06 is a nice all season and is pretty affordable.

I'm thinking of just sticking with a summer tire. Where I live the lows in the winter during the driving hours rarely dip below 30°. Ice isn't a problem. I know the compounds are necessarily made for that low of temps but I'd rather just stick with a summer tire.
