Squeal/whine when pulling away...
Not sure if I can explain this properly but here goes...
I get an odd whine/squealing sound (Assumed it was brake squeal) when I first pull away from standstill. The noise then goes away pretty much straight after and doesn't happen again until next time I get in and it does it again, after start up and pulling away. Thought this was the brakes but have since wondered if it's the gearbox (it's an auto) as it doesn't do it at any other time. Also it's not under braking it's when first pulling away. Has anyone else experienced anything similar?

and is it Auto by any chance?
EDIT: Sorry, just re-read your post.... It's probably the brakes releasing (and slight drag) My M235i was a bugger for it (in the few months I had it) Will get better as the roads dry out as they seem to make more noise when wet. Rukka .

You might find it also does it just before you come to a standstill - try opening the window and listening.
Chances are it's the brakes mate and nothing to worry about. Rukka .

No, I think it is something to do with the rear tyres going faster than the car
But adding to the thread in a more positive way, I would imagine it is the brake pads seizing onto the discs, which seems to happen quite a bit on these cars with M Sport brakes. Some mornings I get a hard jolt as the brake discs un seize themselves from the pads. Worse in winter when they get soggy and rusty. |

It's the handbrake, try pulling it up gently when moving at slow speed, same noise? If you apply the hand brake then release it as you move off the rear brakes sometimes squeal for a few seconds until the hand brake is fully released. The hand brake shoes work on the inside of the disc hub and acts like a mini drum brake. It is not the pads on the disc you can hear but the shoes on the inside of the disc hub.

Mine does this. It's not an m-sport. I asked the dealer to take a look when it went in for
a service but they couldn't duplicate the noise. I might just gently pull up the handbrake next time I hear the squeal. |

Manual actually recommends gently applying some handbrake when pulling away every so often, says it's to reduce corrosion build up and asymmetrical braking.
What k44ENT is saying supports this too. Oh and holy thread revival!! 2016 |

Its the handbrake.
Don't put your foot on the brake, take hand brake off, put foot on brake, put in drive. Move off. If you put it in drive with your foot on the brake and take the handbrake off it will squeal. |

I have the same issue after changing all discs and pads a few months ago. The thing is mine is a manual and non M Sport so I don't even press the brake pedal at all when starting up or setting off. It sounds like it comes from the NSF more than anything.

I always, put foot in break, handbrake off, stick it in D. I assume the issue arises when you’ve got the break applied before you’ve released the handbrake? Last edited by scoss; 02-07-2021 at 07:01 AM.. |

This drove me insane on my 335d. Changed the brake discs and pads all round at bmw but noise was still there. Ended up trading it into webuyanycar as it was driving me crazy.
Some time later I found out it was the handbrake shoe.... |

If light use of the handbrake (while in motion) doesn't reduce or stop it, you really need to take the brake assemblies apart. Clean the inner drum faces and brake shoes, grease the shoe contact points and reset the adjustments. |
