How do I torque these things guys? ST Coilover content

Hey guys,

I'm sort of at a loss for how to torque this thing. I have to hold the shaft still with a wrench while torquing the nut to 29 ft/lbs. Any ideas would be appreciated!

You have to use a pass-through socket so you can use another socket to counter hold the piston shaft.

Yeah... I ordered some today. I just thought the hive-mind might have a creative work around. I bought an 18mm spark plug socket and a crow's foot set, anticipating the hardware to be the same as stock. It's not. Stock has an Allen key up top. These have a normal hex shape. Thank you for responding Farkle.

Having to use another socket to counter hold the shaft makes things a bit trickier, since you need to torque the nut. You'll probably need to use a crows foot on the torque wrench to torque the pass-through socket on the nut.

Alternatively (and I don't like doing it this way but I know people do it), is just impact the nut on with no counter hold. Not very precise though.

Definitely pass through with ankther socket. Harbor freight will have a pass through set sub $20. I've used it to install a couple sets if coilovers on an older car.

I did that on my MK7 GTI when I put H&R springs on. Worked fine I guess. I'm a guy who enjoys doing things properly when I can though. In preparation for this job I was reading my Bentley manual and it specifically said do not do this. First time I had seen that but now I know.

I used a vise grip high up, where the bump stop rests. And an impact wrench.

shame they got rid of the allen key top of that. I use to use a o2 sensor socket and an allen key on my e46
