Does F30 ZF 8AT M/S return to D automatically after 5-10 seconds?

In F30 ZF 8AT M/S mode(without paddle shifter), once gear is shifted manually, does AT return to D automatically(after 5-10 seconds without manual shift), or gear shifter needs to be snapped right to get D again?

I remember the ZF behavior is the former one, but just want to confirm.

If you manually shift a gear with the shifter to the right, it will automatically go back into automatic shifting "D" mode after a brief period of accelerating on throttle.

If the shifter is to the left in M/S mode and you manually shift a gear, it will go from S# to M# and it will never automatically go back to automatic shifting (S# nor D#), and you will hit rev limiter if you dont shift. You need to push it to the right to go back into D#, then back to the left to go into S# (both with automatic shifting)

Thanks for confirmation, current gen G20 ZF 8AT behaves the same as you described, so there is no change from F30 to G20 then.

Can you change manually with the shifter when to the right in D position? Surely you'll be going to neutral and .... attempting reverse.

No, can only manually change gears with paddles when the shifter is to the right, you can't use the shifter itself to do so as when its to the right the shifter is used to go between R / N / D as you noted, not change gears. This is for F3x at least.

Agree, it's paddles only, that's why I'm asking the question, when it is posted it can be done via the shifter in D.

Just to add to what’s been said, with the shifter to the left you can use it to shift gears also, in addition to using the paddle shifters.

That is true, the statement "If you manually shift a gear with the shifter to the right" needs to be qualified "with paddle shifters".

It allows you to drive in "D", and then manually override for corners, passing, etc. and then back to "D" for regular operation.

I leave mine in "S", then using the paddles remains in "M" forever as others mentioned.
